Believe it or not, it was Garbage for me. I immediately fell in love with Version 2.0 at the age of 9. I started going to the Garbage fan forum when I was 11 or so. Then, in 2002, I heard praise of Murray Street. A month later I bought Dirty of course. After that, I purchased NYC Ghosts & Flowers, and that's how it began.

I'd heard many mentions of Sonic Youth through Nirvana, but i hadnt gotten around to pursuing them myself just yet . It wasnt til I was 14 in 1998 that my first boyfriend actually brought himself, then me, a copy of Daydream Nation and we both instantly lost it for them .

I put Nirvana as the band that led me to Sonic Youth but actually that's a lie. I have always heard of Sonic Youth while reading about NIRVANA...though....I always blew it off. Until one day my friend tells me he bought an SY album and I was like "that's coo". He had bought Confusion is Sex/KillYr Idols. We listened to it and it completely changed my world. Soon after that my friend bought Daydream Nation....and we listened to it. Soon after that my friend and I were on a SY craze.

I always got their name in mind while pursuing nirvana and its history. the first time I saw them was when I was watching Live! tonight! sold out!, where they appear very short with sunglasses. I thought they are the coolest fuckers around. still got the tape lying around, should watch it again, its great. |

Yet another Nirvana vote - first time I properly heard SY was watching 1991: TYTPB. I had been vaguely aware of them for a while before that, but that live version of Brother James ripped my fucking head off...

JAMC, I s'pose. There was an issue of NME that had them as cover stars, so I bought it, and there was an SY interview in there as well. I read the interview and thought, "this sounds interesting", went out and bought Flower / Halloween. Never looked back.

I was into rap music bigtime from the mid 80's to the early 90's. I still think thats the best of the rap days. Anyways I saw 100% on MTV's 120 minutes. Kim looked hot and that song rocked and I was hooked. It change my life for the better. Now I cant go 2 days without listening to a song by Sonic Youth.

" ......Woot. ..........."
So yeah, for me it was the fact that I already loved the Velvet Underground, MBV and The Jesus and Mary Chain, and simply because those 3 bands are always mentioned in the same breath as Sonic Youth for exploring 'noise''s place in rock. They were simply a band that kept popping up, getting name dropped, and I had to check them out eventually. |
