Basic Channel and Underground Resistance have been two labels I've been meaning to check out actually. Getting all of these... For some reason btjunkie.org does not seem to be working for me? I think I've found it on Demonoid though, so I'll be getting it from here. Thanks!
Yeah, Bad Science by Rustie is incredible... the way that epileptic melody drops out of nowhere is just incredible. He's got a few tracks that were only released on comps (Zig Zag on Mary Anne Hobbs' Wild Angels, Soapy Tits on Beatnicks Vol 1, Dog Mask on Beatnicks Vol2, Inside Pikachu's Cunt on Warp 2010...), I could upload them for you if you want them - though I highly recommend the whole Wild Angels and both Beatnicks compilations, they're really ace. He's also got that track with Joker called Play Doe, reminds me of Sonic The Hedgehog's soundtracks ahah. Awesome. I'm glad you like him. That Space & Time comp is mad too... I enjoy those Boxcutter, Vaccine and obviously Scuba tracks a whole lot, but the whole comp is ace really. And yeah, Lux is really incredible... I especially enjoyed that track UnCERN. Insane stuff... |

This thread sucks lately
Why don't you guys move your wonky talk to the wonky thread, for example?

because this thread never has had any defined topic, and thus can be used to talk about whatever's on your mind? no one had posted in it for like 10 days anyway so it's not like the wonky talk is interfering with other "unsucky" talk...

revisited burials debut the last days. and I have to say that it is the only dubstep album that passes the test of time for me.
I cant say really why, but I have to admit that the genre in its first year really attracted me in a way. but after burials debut come out it grabbed me by the shoulders and said something like: "forget all the macho basswankery and remember why you started to like electronic music at all: because it can create intense emotions almost completely different (not better) then rock music." I think burial reminded me of a dubsteppy version of Boards of Canada, and afterwards everyting else Ive listened to in that genre felt different. Short afterwards I stopped following the whole dubstep movement. just listening to some of it mainly because of recommendations. I dont know if this makes sense at all. just my impression on dubstep from a complete subjective point of view. dont wanted to dis a whole genre, hahaha

I get what you're saying, and Burial is definitely awesome, but I don't think dubstep is "macho basswankery", at all. Sure, stuff like Skream, Benga, Caspa, and all that wobble wubwubwubwubwub dubstep might be, but there are tons of more atmospheric dubstep artists... This, for instance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZkIPKXCLPw (just naming this because it's stuck in my head at the moment, ahah). But to each their own obvioously, ahah. And Burial is indeed awesome. Though I personally prefer Untrue... It might be one of my favorite records ever, actually.

recommend me some more in the vain of burial!!!
like I said i dont wanted to dis the whole genre. its just that it felt like basswankery back in the days. all the guys and even girls Ive talked to about it (when it was new, hot the next big thing etc.) the only thing they were really interested in where bassacrobatics. and I didnt get it at all. sure it was interesting at the beginning, what they did with the good all bass. but the mainstream music listeners just focused on it. I know a million people who started to produce their own music because of dubstep. which is a good thing. but a lot of them are the best examples of this wankery bass focus. my fault I dont wanted to let it sound like I think dubstep is just about bass. It isnt. but the ugly mainstream feels that way. or to say it better it felt. I am not involved as a follower/fan anymore like a few years ago. I read a review about mount kimbies crooks and lovers recently wich really caught my attention. will have a listen soon I think!!! is it good? to clear it out: I dont like the "male-rage" elements anymore in dubstep. I dont know really why, it isnt that I like this element at all. I recognized that I really enjoyed the black metal documentary "until the light takes us" just because of this aspect. how they build a scene, a "world" out of these exact emotions. even if I dont like the sound, the tolkien world almost nothing about it. I hope I made clear what I am aiming at, and I think I can reduce it to this aspect which gets just pretty huge in a genre wich attracted a lot of people, coming out of nothing.

talking about SKREAM this is pretty cool imo even if not "unpredictable" in places:

@the fox
thanks for all the links. a few years back I could have give you some back. but I am sure you are already known to all my favourite artists back in the days, hahaha. btw a favourite of mine from the first day on, the good old flying lotus... as you are a music creator yourself, here comes a technic question (goes out to everybody else): I recognized over the month that flying lotus is by far the LOUDEST artist in my whole music collection. I am aware of his production techniques and all the different compression styles involved. I think its a big part of his general sound, and I always thought he managed to sound more lively then anybody else in the "wonky" genre. for example "lone" an artist I really like from day one too sounds really flat in comparison. everything is compressed till its one (really cool sounding) stream of sonic attack. despite the similar production styles flyLo managed to let it breathe more (technically I think its because he uses different sidechains, compressing all on different times, or at least some of them). BUT BUT BUT: FlyLo really sounds dull on high volumes!!! I thought this cant be, hahahaa big ass soundsystem in a big ass ghetto car: dull club: dull headphones: even there you can really feel that everything gets louder and being more harsh, but all the "heavy" portions loose their weight in comparison. Is there any artist out there who manages to still keep its weight even with different artistic compressions involved. I WANNA hear that. this is no new loudness war question. i am aware of the difference between commercial (bad) loudness and artistical loudness. I just wanna know if some artist found a way around it without makin compromises. @nic: hi there back. a freind of mine told me too that oslo stinks. hahaha never been in norway, only sweden and denmark. but they are pretty clean no you havent recommended me, just the new grouper! which is AAAAAH!

about your compression question: hmm i don't know if there are artist which would really match your criteria... i like flying lotus out loud myself though, so i guess it's all about taste ahah.
but, overcompressed artists that i think keep weight: clark on turning dragon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_Jg6897GaQ there are a fair number of overcompressed wonky artists nowadays: slugabed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GZiJEMknlQ loops haunt: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsKAV3VN0pk etc. personally, i think they manage to keep their power despite the over compression... by the way if you want some lively wonky: mike slott - gardening oh and this too, though in another meaning of lively ahah: hudson mohawke - joy fantastic (best video ever, too) |
