Oh, did I mention I'm listening to this right now:
It's not all infuriatingly whiny... "Grief" certainly is... (Honestly, Earl - nobody's lifting your flows, and nobody's trying to be you, you're not 2Pac, so shut the fuck up and enjoy life already) .... But that particular song is delivered in kind of a new register for Earl. It's a scratchy awkward teen voice. It's not a pretty sound. The other songs don't piss me off quite as much. Anyway, I still think pretty much all of OF (except for Frank Ocean) needs to show some serious improvement in production if they don't want to hit a giant fucking brick wall. Their sound has not changed ... It's still working, but I promise you, you'll have a few déjà vu moments where you swear Earl's rapping over a Doris beat. It can't touch the year's top releases. Not one bit. But it's worth having. No doubt my opinion will change several times... but I think that much will remain the same. It's a must hear, whether you like it or not. |

I'll listen to Earl later tonight.
Yo I keep telling y'all that Mike G is one of the best dudes in OF. But everyone's a sleepyhead. I swear, he's like "the quiet one" that nobody ever talks about when it comes to OF.

Action Bronson dropped a new album too, Mr. Wonderful. It's cool enough. The dude's talented, sounds like Ghostface still, and has a unique charm about him. I like him, he has an edge and a sense of humor simultaneously. The singles are also legit. Actin' Crazy Baby Blue ft. Chance the Rapper |

Yeah, bro... I already mentioned, like, pretty much everything you wrote in this post, except I apparently like the album a whole lot more, because I put it at #3 of the year so far (for hip-hop). Glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks he cops from GFK. Truthfully though, I hate pretty much *all* white rappers. I mean, of course I love El-P and the Beasties, and a small handful of other notable who have avoided sounding like complete fucking assholes when they rap... But I really can't stand SO many of them. Bronson, like Jonwayne, just does it right. I don't sit and think "Wow, this guy really is white inn't he?" when I listen to his records. He may be pulling from Pretty Tony's magic tophat, but he sounds so much more comfortable in his flow than all those other bitches. Oh, and Mackerel-more sucks a fat load of shit too. Ha. |

I really hope you'll join the discussion, which I'll be forcing everyone here to have, when the new ICP double-album drops then. |

Ok, I don't just hate all white rappers because they're white. I tend to hate most of them because they sound like shit. ICP has so many other things wrong with them that I can't even begin to address where their whiteness falls in the list of their shortcomings. I love Cypress Hill though, as well as the aforementioned Jonwayne and Bronson and Beasties. So not being black doesn't necessarily fuck you in my mind. |

I know right? Bronson is officially on fucking fire. And you know what I love most about him? He doesn't give a FUCK. He's obviously got a champion flow, with excellent taste in beats and a very solid identity. He's doing his thing and it's goofy and also extremely badass, and he's not going to be crying jimself to sleep over Pitchfork's 6.0 review. He's bad as hell, and his record is dope. |

Now Earl's bitching about the launch of his album, and how the label fucked it up.
"Well now everything's just RUINED! This was supposed to be MY album launch. Just Nevermind the stupid album and leave me alone to smoke weed and brood! Thanks a lot, COLUMBIA. Worst employees a teenager could possibly have! Why does everything awful happen to mee?" |

Dude... I feel your frustration with OF. Trust me. We first bonded over talking OF back in the days of Bastard and OF Tape 2... Remember? Anyway I understand why the refusal of Earl and Tyler (specifically) to grow as musicians, lyricists and producers has put you on edge and disappointed you, because it's done the same thing to me. BUT- I don't think the new Earl album is that bit of a disappointment. I do feel that Frank Ocean is far and away the most talented and musically varied artist in the entire group, which is frustrating in itself since he hasn't released an album in just under 3 fucking years (!), and I feel like those early claims about OFWGKTA being the millennial answer to Wu-Tang were EXTREMELY premature and unfounded. But I don't think Earl's making BAD work: he's growing as an emcee. His flow is picking up pace, and he's god a better vocabulary at 19 than most rappers have at the peak of their career. It's not great. It doesn't floor me. And the video for Grief feels like a really desperate attempt to "stay hardcore" in an almost ICP fashion, with creepy imagery that detracts from the underwhelming lyrics. But Domo Genesis put out a dope mixtape last year, and Frank's gearing up for a new album. So keep the hope alive. I think what we need is a full length, official OF album. Something with equal input from all members. Something mature to offset the first few tapes, which no longer excite most of us. I think Tyler needs to let go of the reins and they need to bring in some fresh production and work like a group. There are so many excellent producers out there who are up to the task of revitalizing the OF sound. Since Tyler's NOT RZA, and even RZA fucked up in the end, there's no reason he should be behind the boards all the goddamn time. Don't lose hope man. Frank Ocean is still one of the best names in the game. He's up there. Like, seriously. One of the best artists in the world. "Pyramids," bro! |

Frank is amazing obviously, Channel Orange was my favorite album of 2012, i ranked it just slightly above Good Kid and Fiona Apple's album.
Earl is an incredible rapper, besides that i also really like his personality. he's as awkward as the next dude (or should i say - swagless?), yet completely comfortable in his skin, which i find admirable. Tyler is a childish little cunt, but also a super dope producer and even a really good rapper when he tries, which makes it kinda hard for me to hate him. Odd Future are a talented bunch. i've been waiting for Earl's next move for a long time, and this one just feels like a little appetizer that didn't leave me satisfied.. maybe it'll grow on me, but thus far i think it should've been released as a mixtape. it seems like Earl is the sensitive type which means smoking weed doesn't resonate well with him. maybe it's time for him to kick his habit, go outside and get inspired by real life events. |
