shit, i LOOOOVE kraftwerk. but i positively hate bitches brew. ugh! fusion confusion. "jazz rock". in my mind that's the day jazz died (it didn't really, but it capitulated).

====

now back to this "arena rock" conversation (less butthurt than earlier, because, damn, to be accused of worshiping money,): i get that there is a cultural animus built towards dinosaur bands, but i try to be like st. francis and love all creatures as a default stance.

yes, some things i just can't like, but i see and recognize that the dinosaurs who at some point became the instruments of oppression were once revolutionary on their own.

zeppelin invented heavy/metal, they did so before sabbath. in that they claimed a whole realm for themselves, and ruled for some time as kings, even if in retrospective they seem tame or bluesy by today's standards. when they came out, NOTHING sounded like they did. and because i find modern lizards inferior to their dinousaur ancestors, i still find them as some of the top practitioners of their genre.

same as (saving the enormous differences): i can look at j.s. bach's output and say, holy fuck, what that guy did! and other people like chopin took his work and did mad things with it, adding all sort of emotion and layers, and music has gone farther and in less "mathematical" directions ever since, but what he did stands on its own and is a foundation for a lot of music.

now i said saving the enormous differences-- zeppelin did not invent the blues. the blues is the true big bang of 20th century american music. but what zep did was great and foundational-- before they bloated and exploded like a toad. and they spawned galaxies.

bowie ALSO spawned galaxies. some would argue that it was the better/more intelligent ones.

okay. must work today or i'll go hungry.

Why haven't I mentioned Captain Beefheart yet? Call me crazy, but That Sun Zoom Spark reissue box from last year really got me back into his early '70s run. Beefheart is a far more appropriate '70s artist name drop than Waits, who really hit his stride in the '80s.

Funny. A few days ago I sat down with CCR's debut and whatdoyouknow, the non-singles were boogie blues jammy things. I hope that list consists of real songs.

And I'll check out the M bands, but if I hear the same I-IV-V chords and the same whiteboy blues leads, I'll be sorely disappointed.

Yeah. That's earlier Waits reference was dumb. Neg repped.

Beefheart's blues I can take, maybe because it was his own.

Dammit, Slambang, I said nothing of the sort! I can't tell if that's a botched winky face at the end there, indicating that you *know* that's not what I meant, or if it's just botched punctuation, indicating... well, y'know... that you kinda suck at punctuation.

Please tell me you understand that I didn't mean what you thought I meant.

And no! No more arena rock stuff!

Know what I'm listening to?

Fair point, some of their album tracks fell into that mold. Not the ones I mentioned, although Born To Move has an organ solo; and while it isn't exactly blues based, maybe substitute Wish I Could Hide Away for it. Or Sailor's Lament, which Slob Seger "borrowed heavily" from to write the inferior Still The Same.

I can only recommend Our House Is Rockin' from Marlamade. As for Moby Grape, I prefer their concise rockers like Omaha or Hootchie.

My take on the blues-based rock stuff is that it was originally a good idea that was run into the ground by overuse, especially by bands who thought endless strings of solos showed creativity. Punk came along to sort things out, thankfully.

Absolutely true; same goes for In A Silent Way and On The Corner. That said, Bitches Brew isn't crap by any means — it's just been deemed the non plus ultra of electric Miles by incompetent writers for way too long.

Mr. Lydon considers it Davis' best, though, and compares it to Tago Mago:

Beefheart is one of the most important artists in the popular music. So is Dr. John. Beefheart had two great eras: 1967-70 & 1979-82. Also really love Bongo Fury. Spotlight Kid & Clear Spot are good albums, Unconditionally & Bluejeans are listenable.

One thing about White Stripes: Zeppelin made five great albums, I haven´t heard decent whole album from White Stripes, only good songs ( I have heard White Blood Cells & Elephant).

They're playing another LA show next friday and I am almost as excited about it as the SK reunion show last week..

Speaking of which this is the first time I've listened to or even heard this record, and I must say, I am really surprised. Its the first time I've heard an album version of SK material that sounds better recorded than it does live!! Possibly because of the long gap in playing together?? The stageshow was good to be sure, but this new material seems to sound so much better on the album.

This album has been blowing my mind lately.
Just about exactly the kind of electronic music I like.

Nice job! Good album. Hard to actually find in hard copy... At least in my experience.

I'm listening to the singles a preview material from the new Jamie xx and drooling all over myself. In Colour is going to put the rest of his work to shame. It's become my most highly anticipated album with an official release date, aside from At.Long.Last.A$AP
