Today in my political science class i learned that about 90% or 95% (I can't remember which) of hispanics have jobs in the US and that 60% of white people have jobs. The unemployment rate is at about 4%. This means that people need to shut the fuck up about illegals taking "American" jobs because there are jobs out there but people are just lazy.

i totally agree with you that we're turning into a nation of xenophobes . . . i wonder whether we actually care about "the wretched refuse of your teeming shore" anymore. i mean, granted, some of the people who jump the border are blatantly criminal, and everyone who comes here should probably go through the proper procedures to become citizens, but the only reason why we are are all clambering for giant fences and a policeman every three feet in el paso is because we can't live with the internal inconsistency of letting people come here under the assumption that they're going to contribute something and then discovering that they wind up signing up for all our handouts in droves. that's a problem with the welfare state though, not the immigrants. in the heyday of immigration people would move into ethnic clusters in NYC and set up shop, and while they had all the opportunity in the world to make a fortune, if they didn't secure their own subsistence they were screwed. that's not true today, but it's sure as hell not the mexicans' fault that we've turned semi-socialist in the past century and that people now resent them for "taking" their money, rather than the government for setting up the system that allows them to do that in the first place.
i don't think we're becoming a nation of imbeciles so much as we're becoming a planet of imbeciles. the problem is that if you move away, you might get slightly more intelligent or less blatantly prejudiced individuals, but their governments will want three-quarters of your money and use it to support a dead weight underclass at the expense of the people who are actually productive. i mean, yeah, we fuck up a lot, but we're still the last best hope for humanity. it's not an accident that the richest people on earth are from here, and that they largely started from absolutely nothing. i had forgotten that you were in c'ville until i saw the whole "nearby" PWC thing . . . i live here too now since i'm going to law school. god, i haven't posted here in a thousand forevers . . . everyone update me on what's been going on in the past, christ, i dunno, forty millennia. "Friggens" lives. This thread keeps on chooglin'. Um, whatever, I understand that it's ever so fashionable for twits to rag on America nowadays; and I do admit that it's extremely troubling that we have been under corporate control for at least a generation. And we are guilty of exploitave and imperialist tendencies, just like the other superpowers. But the U.S. Constitution is the finest political document in the history of civilization (as I pointed out earlier in this topic), and you might also want to take note that without U.S. Navy and Air Force supremacy, the world would quickly descend into utter chaos. Next time you might want to just shut the fuck up unless you know what the hell it is you are going on about. |

thank you. i have no problem with corporate control -- it's infinitely better than government control -- but i do agree that there's a major problem with corporations buying the government out. though again, they wouldn't have half the need to if the gov't. would stop regulating the profitable ones out of business and throwing money at the ones who have nothing to offer. and it's not nationalism or jingoism to say that the USA is the last best hope for humanity -- it's simply the truth. go live in china, where religious groups who don't conform to state doctrine have to go underground, and you can't even look up the word "democracy," or to burma, where marching in the streets for basic political freedoms can get you shot and arrested and brutally murdered . . . or maybe sub-saharan africa is your preference, since ethnic cleansing and warlords taking power are the norm, or perhaps north korea, where not smiling broadly enough at political functions can get you imprisoned and tortured, or venezuela, where the business ventures into which you've put your entire life and livelihood can be seized by the dictator on a whim, or russia, where dissenters somehow mysteriously disappear or suffer violent deaths by poisoning or assassination, or the majority of the middle east, where being born with a vagina automatically makes you a second-class citizen, and being gay gets you stoned to death . . . or maybe turkmenistan, which is just coming out of an absolute dictatorship where you could say absolutely nothing negative about your country, and the only book learning is a spiritual guide written by the dictator . . . do you get my gist? it pisses me off to no end to see people bashing on the US merely because it is fashionable. as atari said, look at the founding principles of this country. look at the incredible courage it had to take to stand up to the same kind of dictatorial regime under which about half the world is laboring, declaring that all people have certain basic rights which no government may legitimately take away from them, and be willing to fight and die for those principles rather than continue to labor under the unspeakable oppression. this nation has one hell of a lot of flaws, but it is still the freest nation in all of recorded history. so yeah, we are the last best hope for humanity. it is easier to be critical than to be correct . . . next time think of the implications of what you're saying. i'm not saying all this to be a dick -- i totally respect your right to have your opinion, and if you could genuinely back it up with fact i'd be willing to accept it even though i'd still vehemently disagree with it -- but that was nothing short of an attack, and there's no way you're ever going to get people to come around to your position by attacking them or lashing out epithets at them.

I wish this thread would die, since this debate is going nowhere. Both sides are going to agree on their own point, and nothing will change that.

We've got Hollywood, you don't. Most of the world's record companies and publishers are based here. New York City has been the world's art capital since the '40s. |

Well that is true, but this is just going in a loop. But don't mind me go on, sorry to be the wrench in your debate.

I take most of what I've read in that link with a pinch of salt. I'd like to know where they get those statistics. Also, there's no mention of Britons leaving the island in search of greener pastures. Besides, Britain won't be the only place to experience overpopulation in the future.

I agree, I think many places will be facing over population Personally I think this island is already over populated With regard to the Office of National Statistics figures, they include emigration as well as immigration The scary thing is the ONS is a government department and usually underestimates figures |
