You seem to have chosen one of the deadest evenings in London's history to be in town.

Cochrane Theatre, Southampton Row, Holborn, London WC1B 4AP http://www.cochranetheatre.co.uk "International in its sweep, uncompromising in its substance" - Time Out Two dozen performers from around the world are given free reign to redefine music. Over three days they coax incredible sounds from all manner of instrument, in every conceivable manner. Performers include the elder statesman of Japanese sound-art Yasunao Tone; mesmeric minimalist legend Charlemagne Palestine; and Norbert Möslang, enigmatic torturer of household electrical goods. Group improvisations, drawing on diverse talents thrown in at the deep end of spontaneity, feature Tony Buck, superlative drummer of Australia's best export, The Necks; brilliant Belgian string virtuoso Julia Eckhardt; and sensational American trumpeter Peter Evans. And to surprise ourselves, some players at the very edge of audio arts: Taku Sugimoto, whose guitar playing is so restrained as to stretch the laws of time; Bob Levene, who uses turntables as audio sculpture; and Helena Gough, who reveals the laptop as a landscape teeming with twittering life. Take an example from Eve and Experiment. Thursday 29 November: Yasunao Tone + Taku Sugimoto + Bob Levene + Angharad Davies & Julia Eckhardt & Michael Duch Friday 30 November: Charlemagne Palestine + Norbert Möslang + Robin Hayward & Matt Davis + Billy Roisz & Angélica Castelló Saturday 1 December: Peter Evans & Steve Beresford & Mark Sanders + John Butcher & Tony Buck & Burkhard Stangl + Margarida Garcia & Barry Weisblat + Helena Gough Cochrane Theatre, Southampton Row, London WC1B 4AP Box Office: 020 7269 1606 http://www.cochranetheatre.co.uk www.l-m-c.org.uk Festival Pass: £35/ LMC Members £20 Day Pass: £15 / LMC Members£10 / Students £5 Bar opens 6pm http://www.l-m-c.org.uk |

WIRE 25: [NO.SIGNAL] PRESENTS SATURDAY 17 NOVEMBER TRAPIST (AT) RAFAEL TORAL & ROGER TURNER (PT/UK) KLANGSTAUB (UK/DE) (GARY SMITH & BERNHARD GUNTER) BO WIGET & LUIGI ARCHETTI (CH) with a music selection by TONY HERRINGTON (The Wire) BUSH HALL 310 Uxbridge Road W12 7LJ Tube: Shepherd's Bush (Hammersmith & Central line) 5 minutes walk doors: 7.30pm / start: 8.0pm £10 (adv) / £12 (door) http://no-signal.net/wire25/ ABOUT THE ARTISTS -- TRAPIST - http://trapist.klingt.org/ Trapist is Martin Brandlmayr (from Radian) on drums, Martin Siewert on guitars/electronics and Joe Williamson (double bass). Since they started working as a trio in 2000 Trapist have released two full-length albums, "Highway My Friend" on HatHut/ Hatology (2002) and "Ballroom" on Thrill Jockey (2004). Drawing from both a wide variety of influences ranging from space rock to improvised minimal music, and from folk-influenced psychedelia to noise as well as the members' numerous collaborations the band has managed to establish an unique ensemble sound defying categorization, blending both acoustic and electronic instruments as well as blurring the gaps between improvisational music and prestructured forms. "If Trapist are a power trio, they're running on an ancient car battery rather than the national grid... Brilliant stuff." (Peter Marsh, BBC) "For a moment, it sounds as though Siewert is channeling both John Cage and the Phantom of the Opera simultaneously." (Vital Weekly) ===== RAFAEL TORAL & ROGER TURNER - the SPACE PROJECT (World Premiere) Formerly known for his work with guitar and electronics, RAFAEL TORAL terminated in 2003 that line of works to completely renew his approach to music: he now researches performance possibilities in electronic music. His long-term "Space Program" is a quest for a discipline to structure musical discourse in "post-free jazz electronic music", using experimental, custom-built or modified instruments. Since 1974, ROGER TURNER's work has been concentrated on exploring a personal percussion language through the processes of improvisation. Collaborations with experimental rock music, extensive work with dance, film and photo-projection, involvements in numerous jazz-based ensembles & workshop residencies have formed part of that development. 'One of the giants of free improvisation' (The Wire, 2001) === KLANGSTAUB (Bernard GUNTER & Gary SMITH) (DE/UK) - World Premiere http://www.myspace.com/klangstaub Gary SMITH: guitar Bernard GUNTER: trumpet, electronics Klangstaub is an improvised music duo consisting of Bernhard Günter, Koblenz, Germany ( clarinet, pocket trumpet, live electronics, looping and mixing, plus an occasional field recording) and Gary Smith, London (electric guitar). [no.signal] is proud to present the first ever live production. Their musical encounter started with a remix project which lead to an exchange of recordings of improvised material, mostly of flutes and Esraj (and Indian string instrument played with a bow but used as a percussion instrument here). Bernhard plays clarinet, acoustic guitar, and live looping whereas Gary Smith is on his preferred mastered instrument - the guitar. This will be a World premiere. == LUIGI ARCHETTI & BO WIGET (CH) - UK Premiere Guitar, Cello and electronics Archetti & Wiget started collaborating in 1994 and released a stunning example of contempoary jazz/electronics, Low Tide Digitals on the Norwegian label Rune Grammofon (2001). The duo also does performances, music for theater and dance pieces and experimental short movies. Their film "I have seen you dancing better than this" has been screened at The Place, and won the 2nd price at MuVi award at Kurzfilmfestival Oberhausem Germany . They have been involved in improvising dance performances with Meg Stuart, Antonija Livingstone, Emil Hrvatin, Vera Mantero a m o. "The fusion of the mechanical and the organic is sensual, thrilling and mysteriously moving." (Edwin Pouncey, The Wire) |

The Flea-Pit 49 Columbia Road London E2 - 7RG 020 7033 9986 http://www.thefleapit.com/ Immersion is a free-entry experimental music/sound-art event featuring a soundtrack of ambient journeys, electronic atmospheres, noisescapes, sonic experiments and tones/drones. Immersion is an arena for new and established artists performing live experimental electronic music partnered by stimulating projected visuals processed live and tailored for each performance. The Flea-Pit is a unique cafe-bar/arts venue with comfortable retro furniture - and a gallery/performance area, in the heart of east/central London's vibrant art scene and is located only five minutes away from Shoreditch High Street. Nearest tube: Old Street (exit 2). The artists featured in Immersion 06/12 are: 0 > 1: 0 > 1 is an alias for the miscellaneous musical deluge of London-based electroacoustic composer Lee Fraser. This performance will feature the live sequencing and manipulation of pre-recorded sound objects alongside complex generative micro-rhythmic structuring. www.myspace.com/greaterthanset Gareth Mitchell: Using primarily voice and prepared guitar, live work is based around reinventing songs, improvising and augmenting sound with loops, effects and laptop electronics. He has released five solo albums of experimental music on various labels such as Kranky and ERS/Staalplaat and performed at numerous venues such as The Knitting Factory in New York and festivals around Europe such as Nozart in Cologne and EARational in s'Hertogenbosch, Holland and OFFF in Barcelona. Collaborations include those with Stefano Giust, Thomas Kumlehn, Rediffusion and We Have Information. He has worked on several commissions, most recently for the National Theatre ("Next Generation"), Resonance FM's Radio Gallery series and the Arts Council ("speaksong" for the Lit Up festival in Kendal). www.garethmitchell.info/ Map 165: There is a rich history of providing soundtracks for classic silent films and in this way discovering something new about the pieces. This is especially true of the work of the early 20th century Surrealists. Their extraordinary and pioneering work still amazes and provides a wonderful opportunity to marry creative sound to their startling images. To this end, Map 165 will be providing new soundtracks for a selection of short Surrealist films by Leger and Man Ray. Using their usual 'planned improvisation' method, Martin A. Smith and Tim Hooper hope to unearth new meanings and deeper complexities within the films. www.map165.martinasmith.co.uk/ Orfeus 9: Orfeus 9 melds electronic music with samples including space debris, poetry and natural sounds to create ambient soundscapes, big beat and IDM. An eclectic sonic crucible. www.myspace.com/orfeus9 SS_R: Presents a series of sound experiments created by building upon non-programmed minimal repetitions of static noise and rhythmic feedback - processed through multiple filters and defined by accidental and reactive parameter interactions. www.ssr-electronics.tk/ Suero: Suero is not looking for an electronic-perfect-label to describe what it does. Suero does not use computers. Suero builds a real time sound-noise sculpture based on his own sounds, to drive the listener to an analogue extreme and dark field, rather than a "cliche electronic happiness". www.myspace.com/sueroH2O Full information: www.immersionclub.tk |

spnm's The Sound Source presents: ELLIOTT SHARP, guitar/laptop with special guest CHRISTIAN MARCLAY, turntables Doors 7.30 Performance from 7.45 £6 in advance from http://www.ticketweb.co.uk/user/?region=gb_london&query=detail&event=245792&interf ace= £8 on the door And see http://www.spnm.org.uk - we'll be offering you the chance to vote to shape an element of the night... spnm's ground-breaking music night The Sound Source has its second date at the Luminaire, with two of the of the world’s most influential experimental practitioners and emerging British artists exploring the convergence of the roles of composer, improviser and performer. The night features New York-based multi-instrumentalist Elliott Sharp with special guest, Swiss-American artist and turntablist, Christian Marclay. The event begins with Open Source in association with Music Orbit, an experimental slot showcasing up-and-coming British artists, which will be recorded, and a free CD of the results will be given to audience members at the end of the night. In addition, experimental films curated by the Kilburn-based collective no.w.here will be screened during the night. A pioneer and leading light of New York's downtown scene for over 30 years, Elliott Sharp is a brilliantly gifted performer, composer and producer. Tonight’s event sees him perform The Velocity of Hue, a jaw-dropping solo guitar work inspired by country blues guitar and Central Asian musics. The programme also includes works for laptop interfaced with acoustic guitar during which Sharp will process guitar sounds and manipulate samples and grooves. Since the early 1970s Sharp has been creating innovative and visionary music, drawing upon chaos theory and fractals and reinventing a variety of traditional instruments. When these did not suffice, Sharp created his own: slabs, pantars, violinoids, doubleneck guitarbasses, octars. He used computers and later samplers to design new sounds and virtual instruments. Sharp has released over sixty-five recordings spanning the musical spectrum from blues, jazz, and orchestral music to noise, no wave rock, and techno music. He performs regularly both as a soloist and with a number of ensembles he has formed over the years, including the blues-oriented Terraplane and Orchestra Carbon. Christian Marclay's trailblazing turntable experiments have led him to be described as ‘the most influential [turntable] figure outside hip hop’. He explores the fusion of fine art and audio cultures, transforming sounds and music into a visible, physical form through performance, collage, sculpture, installation, photography and video. Marclay was born in California in 1955, raised in Switzerland and now lives in New York. He has exhibited widely, including solo exhibitions at the Barbican and Tate Modern. spnm's The Sound Source is the UK's leading out-of concert-hall new music night, bringing cutting-edge composition to new audiences and venues. The series showcases multimedia work and collaborations that cross art-forms. The Sound Source is a regular, bi-monthly night at the Luminaire. http://www.spnm.org.uk/events |

Steffen Basho-Junghans Jozef Van Wissem Wooden Spoon Kalbakken Saturday December 1st The Fleapit, Columbia Rd, London E2 8pm, five pounds Basho-Junghans is a Berlin-based guitarist, painter and free author widely appreciated as one of the finest post-Takomo steel-string players around. "German acoustic guitarist Steffen Basho-Junghans has so convincingly furthered the Takoma-era steel string concepts of John Fahey and Robbie Basho that in his hands the instrument's potential once more feels limitless."- The Wire. Jozef Van Wissem is bringing the lute into a contemprary context with great success. His latest album, 'Stations of the Cross' is an incredible testament to the hypnotic dexterity of the rarely-explored intrument. Has collaborated with Tetuzi Akiyama, Gary Lucas and has a forthcoming joint recording with James Blackshaw. Wooden Spoon takes in references from British folk, the Takoma tradition, country blues and minimalism. On his great Bo Weavil LP, he plays acoustic guitar with occasional banjo, piano and tape loops. Wooden Spoon creates music of joy and sadness all at once. Forthcoming tape on our very own label. Kalbakken is a sibling duo from Manchester playing reworkings of Norwegian folk songs which they are familiar with from childhood using voice, violin and guitar. www.myspace.com/unluckrecs |

WEDNESDAY 28TH NOVEMBER
Corsica Studios presents BABA YAGA’S HUT a new regular night of alternative live music Every Wednesday 8 pm – 12 am £7/ £6 NUS Corsica Studios 4 Elephant Road London SE17 1LB 020 7703 4760 info@corsicastudios.com www.corsicastudios.com LIVE!! CIRCLE + GUAPO PLUS KOSMISCHE DJS CIRCLE http://www.circlefinland.com Finnish psych drone guitar warlords return as part of their European Tour Formed in 1991 in Pori, a town on the western coast of Finland, Circle (along with its many satellites, side-projects, colleagues, neighbours and even parents) has long been one of the most prolific and internationally visible bands in the Finnish underground. The droning and hypnotic influence of newer acts like Loop, Jesus & mary Chain or Spacemen3, as well as the classic folk and hard rock of the 1970s, was clear Circle augmented its drone with more austere essences boiled down from hours and hours of exposure to 70s and 80s hard rock. After this long and happy search for musical meaning spanning over 15 years, Circle has managed to make grownup metal in the most inclusive and positive sense of the word by taking the stodgy riffage of 1980s and shooting through a prism of various psychedelic and experimental influences. GUAPO http://www.guapo.co.uk Fusing fragments of kraut-rock, minimalism and folk then binding it all together in a prog-rock shell, Guapo make cluster-fuck post rock that dips, dives and crashes in the most pleasing fashion imaginable. Guapo is a force of nature; an infinitely expanding climax, a controlled catastrophe, a sun forged in sound. It can be shaped, controlled, even tamed; but the strain of trying to contain it is etched into the contorted faces and flailing limbs of those brave and foolish men who take it upon themselves to do so. Exposed to Guapo in a confined space, members of an audience will tend to do one of two things. Some will immediately seek the nearest exit, while those left behind turn to face the music, transfixed like prey engulfed in a tiger's roar. New album Elixirs will be released on Neurot Recordings soon. ADVANCE TICKETS: http://www.wegottickets.com/event/22534 |
