dunno, they're not that noise to me. I mean, they're fuzzy and shit, but still straight up rock'n'roll anyways. Might be just my opinion though. I love that stuff nevertheless. 'Shame Fantasy II' is one of my records of the year so far.

I don't really go for contemporary rock... there's not much point as it has been done before countless times. However, recently I have been impressed by Awesome Color .

oh yeah. kyuss, melvins, a perfect circle, tool(intellectual metal), bardo pond, converge(hardcore), probot(king diamond, max cavalera, etc, etc...), anything by neil young, pearl jam, dillinger escape plan, failure, the hives, the racounteurs, white stripes, jane's addiction, jesus lizard, machine head, flaming lips?, meshuggah, nine inch nails(with teeth, very entertaining, IMHO), primal scream, the fall, massive attack(100th window)

Not exactly new, but:
Melvins - Houdini (1993), Ozma (1989) Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers (71) and Exile (72)

Liars isn't what I'd call straightup rockandroll. It's good, but it's more experimental. Rather noisy, disorderly, but ultimately beautiful. Definitely on the avant edge.

I'm not into too much current straightup rock, becuz to me much of that kind of thing sounds too derivative of 60s, 70s, 80s stuff I like. I'd rather go back and listen to the Stones or the Replacements or Modern Lovers than listen to people making pale copies of that. The best in contemporary music, I feel, is in noise and more experimental stuff rather than in the more traditional approaches.

The Sound of Urchin is the best straight-up rock band out right now. The Diamond is a great album from start to finish.

saying that the only boris good boris album is pink and not the others because they are so different is like saying that the only good sonic youth album is daydream nation and not the others.
and yeah, amusement parks on fire are pretty swell for simple guitar rock pop with dream pop touches. i forgot the notwist on my list, they are awesome riff rock that's very different and original. |

I've heard big things about Tv on the Radio, then I gave them abit of a listen to (just from the net) and I didn't really like what I heard (it was off the new album). So I'm glad I didn't do a guess purchase.

new tvotr has a more expanded sound than their previous stuff and they have fine tuned their songwriting skills, the sound isn't as dark (gone are the pere ubu/suicide/throbbing gristle influences) but it's certainly more varied. i haven't really had a chance to really get so much into the album as i haven't heard it much but it does sound interesting.
desperate youth...was definitely a grower for me. |

Their vocals are very... have a very... somewhat... reggae feel? Alittle like Michael Franti. I didn't dig the vocals. In it's defense, I ownly heard one song, though.
