So by 'skronk' we're referring to to those sounds extending beyond the base notes played? That feedback, over modulated, distortion etc. etc.
Wouldn't that make 'skronk' synonymous with noise? Based on your Mote example I'd guess this was the case. But why mention those five particular bands than any number of straight up noise bands? All of those bands are well, fairly conventional by relative standards, especially Dinosaur (no digs against Dinosaur, they're my favorite). Dinosaur Jr. is really just a straight up rock band when you get down to it that happens to employ high amounts of volume and distortion. So, in my understanding skronk is the highlighted noise that is an extension to the core rock and roll dynamics employed by band of your choice. Techno rules. Boredoms' Circle and Rodan's Toothfairy Retribution Manifesto come the closest to the music I hear in my head. Also anything where drums thunder.

I do find it strange that a SY fan could dislike Murray Street.

I wanted to say something like that, but I didn't want to sound too biased. BTW, honestly I gave up on "understanding" Rob's stance on a bunch of things, I say this in a non-belligerant nor aggressive/bad way.

NYC G& F is not my fave in terms of overall albums but I do dig it.
but I hates me some EJST&NS I enjoy Murray but find it to be the most sleepytime snoozy of all their albums no need to understand anything. we are all walking contradictions, which is why life is so great

SY put the skronk in all they do.
I love it. which is why I am having the 22 minute version of diamond sea played AS my funeral.

but enough about the semantics of the word "skronk."
Let us hear about your favorite skronk moments in a SY song! Or any other song! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the last 15 seconds of Mildred Pierce. Like I said earlier, I love the song INHUMAN. to me that is the definitive SY song.

Sonic Youth are (were?) a good band because of their ability in writing good to special songs, and doing it with a pretty varied amount of influences at their disposal. Influences that are not always taken into account by many of their fans. If SKRONK was the only thing that defined them I doubt they'd have as many fans as they have.

I guess I should always add the two words "TO ME" after everything I write, even though it is extremely obvious that that applies to anything anyone ever writes here

The set he did for the brian turner show in the studio's toilets is even better than that. There's a video on utube too.

I never use skronk as a genre name. I just use it to refer to the parts of sonic youth songs that other people go "that's just noise."
those are my favorite parts!
