We're all going to own one some day - although some of you will own the knock-offs that will be contributed back to Apple.

You think iPads wont be standard in 20 years, or even 10 years time?
8-track users in the 70s would have said the same thing about digital music. I personally think I'll always prefer a hard copy of literature, but I was once against downloading music too, which is how I get most of my music these days. Books in the future will become antiques and secondhand bookstores will go ramped and charge obscene prices for things you buy today. Even libraries are starting to move into online-digital lending, and you've been able to 'borrow' films online for awhile now. It's the way of the future. I wont be buying one just yet, but I will most likely embrace them fully in the future.

I'd get one if I were rich and I bought stuff on the basis of it being a cool idea. But alas, that's not the case.

Exactly. I was able to play with one at Bes Buy on Saturday. No thanks, I'll stick to my laptop. Apple can suck it. Perhaps it's open source competitors will be more impressive. |

It's primarily for the use of digital literature etc, which is a bit advanced for these times anyways. Well that's the adverts I've seen of it anyway. Instead of buying a book in hardcopy, you'll buy a digital book and read it on an iPad, aswell as general browsing of the net. There's much more use than just this, but I think that's been the main spin. They keep being compared to laptops but they're meant for different purposes, even though you can do everything on a laptop as you can on an iPad, but they're also only a quarter of the price than a Macbook.

Being backlit, the screen of the ipad is quite bad for reading e-books etc.
A decent solution could be inverting the colours, making the pages' background black and letters white. It would also cut a bit the power draw. I see it as a big portable thing to use at home, instead of carrying around a laptop to write something or browse the net, emails etc. not much more. the lack of flash support is horrid, it cuts out a good portion of the whole internet experience. if you drool over useless (but admittedly funny/interesting in some cases) apps it could be worth buying if you had some spare money. along with this: http://www.thinkgeek.com/stuff/41/iCade.shtml

designed obsolescence
DRM the sensitive electonics in the explosion of these person devices - mobile phones, mp3 players, ereaders - as well as more common electronics are made from minerals sourced from the Congo. The mines are commonly controlled by the rebel militias or the army, often worked under conditions of human rights abuses or just plain slave labour, and the profits fund their unending war. the dubious recycling of these personal electronic devices (and ordinary computers it should be pointed out), if they're recycled at all and not just thrown into a landfill which is another issue all together, in China is also abhorrent: over a fire or hotplate with a grill placed over it the circuit boards are held so the solder melts and the parts shaken lose. This is done by hand and workers are directly inhaling the toxic fumes.

the business model you endorse says you don't own the right to anything. You own the right to use it. So Amazon.com o Apple can without permission remotely delete your stuff. You'll pay just as much, but own nothing. Its "Cloud Consuming". It amazes me that no one questions anything. Its got to be the flouride in the water. I pointed out to a coworker the headlines on the free newspaper today : celebrity Sex tapes, David Barton planted story, and of course Tiger Woods. The world is falling apart but this is what the Elite wants you to think about. GOOD SLAVE. |
