Only just beginning to digest Carter II, and so far it's doing a good job of changing my opinion a bit, although I still haven't fully got it yet. His flow is just so completely out of my expectations that it's difficult to process at first.

Will check out that Banner video soon, because I LOVE the video for Play. So fucking gloriously over the top.

The Geto Boys are brilliant, check out everything they've done! And then move on to Scarface's solo career which is just as good at times.

you know more about the Count than I. The only album of his I'm familiar with is Dwight Spitz. Other than that, I'm only acquainted with him thru the work of DOOM and related.

binkis recs is more good southern hiphop, their song "beat you in the head" is one of my favourite tracks of all time

the influence of Souther Hip Hop on non-Southern MC's is also interesting...

MF Doom now lives in Atlanta, though he was born in UK and mainly resided in NY for most of his career. But relocated to ATL during the whole Doomposter era. Note the track "Yessir," on BORN LIKE THIS, and (hopefully) the release of promised crew record by Metal Face Acedemy.

also, back in early 00's, Kool Keith praised (of all people) Master P and the South's understanding of minimalism in production and interesting cadences.

to paraphrase HG Lewis' theme from 2000 MANIACS: the South will rise again... in hip hop.

i remember around the time of Black Elvis Kool Keith was giving props to some pretty wack rappers purely for the reason that they were the only ones who didn't cop styles from him.
