why do you people want to like noise?
if it's not your cup of tea, stop trying. --- ok, listen to merzbow's venereology or rainbow electronics or masonna's frequency lsd, if you think it's talentless shitracket, then you don't like noise, period. |

good "noise" to me has to have some sort of structure. If you are going to record a ten minute noise piece for example, it should have a sonically defined beginning, middle and end. To me the sounds made are what define "noise" not a complte lack of musical structure in the piece. without some sort of sonic "structure" (and I use that term loosely, see the second half of MOTE for a prime example of a good noise structure) all you have ais a sequence of sounds with no flow, no sonic story to be told.
The worst noise is when someone figure sout how to amke a cool sound, and just records that sound in variatio for ten-fifteen minutes. that shit is fucking BORING background music, no better than muzak, or fucking "ambient" techno, and equally as pointless. background music for hispters to eat dinner to. you will hear this shit at yr old folks home in 60 years, when it is naptime.

and to me all sounds are valid, whether clean tones or the chaotic "noise" that sonic youth uses regularly.
the end result is what is crucial.

I pretty much agree, even though some directionless bullshit noise can occassionally be interesting too... but it's probably, technically, not "good" noise. It's hard to define "good", I guess. The problem with the noise scene, more than almost any other scene (except maybe prog rock), is trying to differentiate "good" from "Aesthetically pleasing". People in the noise scene seem to talk more about a cool idea than a truly great record -- "oh man, that guy recording himself clipping his fingernails through an effects pedal, this is an amazing record!" ... but, maybe it is. Just, whatever is interesting to listen to, whatever sparks your boner, etc.

there isn't such thing of noise!! for most people noise is when people hear some sound with the concepts of western music. and if that sound don't follow the western rules they will name it as noise...yeah ok but you need to classified everything...problably John Cage will say to you : noise is when you try put concepts and theory inside the sound...music is when you let the sound go free!
so there isn't bad or good noise...there is just sound... everywhere just waiting for you. ok i need to drink...wishky, juice, water, vodka, red wine?? |

John Cage had some good ideas, but he, like many others, overthought things. Just make music. Just make noise. Just do whatever you want, and don't worry if it is good or bad, or if people like it or not. 100 years from now we will all be dead and nobody but maybe some rogue history buff will look into you at all and care what you did, thought, created, or liked.
Now, how about that drink?
