The end of Cabiria always gets me choked up.
But, if I may quote the asshole in line in front of Woody in Annie Hall, he is a very "self-indulgent" director. This is most obvious in his later work, but even in his neo-realist period he didn't always cut as much as he should. As I look over the list, I really only dig three or four of his movies. As much as I appriciate the look of Sayricon, for example, I don't anticipate ever watching it again. And let's be honest--his ADR sucks the big one. When he had a tiny budget, fine. I can deal with it. But by 8 1/2, it's just amaturish. I don't mind slow movies. I love Bresson and Bergman. But Fellini is often not just slow--he's fucking BORING. |
