I love the Pumpkins - Gish, Siamise Dream, Adore all amazing records. MCIS and Machina had some good tracks on them too. I'm a bit worried about the reunion if this is Billy, Jimmy and some other dudes I think it will be upsetting to some fans. The Pumpkins are one of those bands thats defined our younger years. All the other kids were listening to Green Day, but we knew so much better and loved the Pumpkins. Whatever you think of them they are one of the best 'gateway' bands. I would rather keep the pumpkins in my head as a soundtrack to all those great memories than have half the pumpkins comeback and to some extent ruin the innocence of all that.

^ I agree but I'm too big of a pussy to have said it myself.
and minus Adore, not my cup-o-tea. I also never listen to their later stuff. Melon Collie was the death nail, as far as I was concerned. |

There is a split about the Pumpkins on this board. Although someone did a poll and it turned out more people liked them than disliked them. They were an important band of that whole GenX era. If you ignore a lot of the bullshit that surrounds them I think the music still stands up.

Because they love playing and performing and love specifically playing together. I wake up in the morning and write music, play my guitar, I then listen to music whist reading about music. I might decide to Jam with the band and then go see a gig. It becomes your life. I can't imagine someone telling me I could no longer write music or play on stage with my friends.

what rubbish, those bands are about money, not music, if they loved what they did so much they wouldn't have split up in the first place. they should have the good grace to realise it's high time they removed themselves from the public eye.

People have disagreements. Time heals most of the petty arguments people have when they have to live for years in each others pockets. I think you are being a little simplistic in saying "Its all about money". Rock bands become so much a part of our memories and our lives we often forget it all comes down to 4 dudes who enjoy playing together. I agree the new Dinosaur Jr stuff is god awful, I know friends who write better stuff than that, hell I write better stuff than that but if they enjoy playing it, well i'll just shut up and listen to the old records and just keep hoping they release something soon I enjoy. After all how many people have called for SY to just give up at various points?

of course it's about the money, it's naive to think they'd do it for any other reason, and besides, that thing about 4 dudes who enjoy playing together doesn't even work in smashing pumpkins case seeing as it's just two of them plus session guys.

We don't know that yet although like I said above I doubt very much its the original pumpkins. Certainly Billy and Jimmy love working together (Jimmy was Billy's best man). I wasn't really talking specifically about the Pumpkins. I was talking generally about bands staying together for long periods of time or reuniting. I can see why if you enjoy playing with people you may want to continue. In Billy's case I think it has to do with him being in love with the idea of the Smashing Pumpkins. If you read interviews he has done over the years he seems to have a lot of affection for that whole 90's GenX, Alt-Rock thing or whatever you may wish to call it. The Pumpkins represent for him the perfect manifestation of all the ideas of that period. I don't think he was ever ready to let that go. The Pumpkins was always to much a part of him.

Nevermind, found them
Putting them all over the internet due to Billy's thoughts about Kurt Cobain and Pavement. |
