people voting for Beyonce either aren't watching the videos, or are gay, or are women.
Shakira's hips move so much better its not even funny. her outfits are hotter, etc. this is ridiculous

I got into Black Dice back in 2001. So, I've been listening to them for 8 years now. Beaches and Canyons is where I think they reached their peak; classic record, definitely. I have heard everything they've done times one hundred. Probably listened to them, combined, more than you have (just taking a guess here, mind you), and have seen them live once. Their last few albums are the worst shit I've ever heard in my entire life. 3 boring guys with 3 boring samplers doing random, boring, nearly-unlistenable bullshit. That being said, "Manoman" is a fun song, from their more recent stuff, as it avoids most of what makes them vomit-inducing. Their music makes me feel physically ill, it's so bad. Yeah, that's probably the "point" but eh... That song is really good though, I was actually quite shocked by it, and I decided to give their stuff a chance again... But alas... still just random-ass fart sounds. You know the monkeys with the typewriters analogy? I'd say 3 monkeys with Fruity Loops could produce better stuff than Black Dice, given about an hour. I totally "get" what they're doing, but I think they're quite awful, nothing really to latch onto besides a few interesting noises here or there, but obviously playing with a sampler, you're going to produce something cool, occasionally. Now that I'm thinking about it, they actually might be one of the most boring bands ever, all things considered. Ugh. They probably sound cool on acid, though. |

Serenity soothes the realm, contrasting the saturation of the Inferno, but is this what I yearn for? A place of tranquility -- yet also absence? Is my life supposed to be ambivalent, where a place of peace exists only with the added presence of military force?

how can they be "terrible" if you admit they've made at least one "classic" album.... and when did you see them live? i saw them twice this year... first time was good. 2nd time [at atp] was amazing. i discovered that BD really depends on the venue/volume/engineer.... as for yr opinion of their last 3 albums... i just disagree. i have listened to them a shit-ton... not since 2001 [they weren't making good stuff until 02 with b&c anyhow], but over the past few years, they've been consistently one of my favorite/most-listened to bands. and I don't think they've been getting worse.

Saw em years back, before they got too crazy with the samplers and shit, they played at a converted art house gallery with a skateboarding half pipe and a room full of mirrors. Insane venue!
...A band can be terrible now, to me, but still have released great stuff before. I think they've released one great album, a few decent songs, but all their recent albums .. well .. I HATE THEM. So, in my mind, they're more of a shit band, despite some good stuff. Same goes for Animal Collective -- same goes for lots of bands, who I hold one or two albums in high regard for but have mostly shit I don't want to bother with. I'd still dismiss them, just not dismiss whatever cool album they made. I mean, most bands get worse as they go along, but few bands turn to complete dog shit after doing something truely brilliant. I think Beaches and Canyons works because a lot of it is still so human. I feel like the technological aspect of their recent stuff turns me off (and this is coming from someone who likes cold, electronic stuff like Autechre and Pan Sonic and so on). I just get this sense of ... naivety ... from their work, which probably attracts people to it. Some kids with lots of energy sitting around and trying to make gloopy noises on a sampler. I guess as someone who has personally fucked with samplers for years, I just don't hear anything too interesting about their work, they're not breaking any new ground, and their choices of sounds just don't do anything for me. I think if they could apply their noises into some interesting context (for example, put some of the fart bass gloop noise as a layer into a more structured song), I'd LOVE them. As it stands, they just seem like a band with nothing for me to latch onto, and they're very amateur at what they do. My biggest criticism for their work is that it's so directionless. Clearly, they recreate these songs (for the most part) in a live context, so that's kinda cool, so it's not completely "random", but I guess the songs don't tell a story, for me, and they don't break new ground, and they don't [etc] ... they just exist. Still, obviously, SOMETHING attracts me to their work, as I keep listening to it. So, maybe it is wrong of me to dismiss it out right. I guess I do find them interesting, I just don't (usually) get anything from their work. I don't see the big deal with them, I guess. Glad you like 'em though! I guess it's kinda cool that they're somewhat popular (you know, relatively speaking), considering what they're doing is sorta ... out there... but I just don't happen to find it listenable, usually. I gotta give 'em credit for having achieved some degree of popularity. I'm sure they'll do something really fucking cool again one day, who knows. We'll see. |

well in their current live set-up, Eric Copeland is the only one who uses only sampler... Bjorn has some sampler type-thing as well, but usually plays guitar, and Aaron is screaming into the mic and beating on an electronic drum-type thing.
the 'naivety' thing you say is interesting... i guess in the way that i hear stuff that my friends make in a day or so, and i go 'oh, that sounds like bd'... but there's something else they put into it... not sure what it is... but it works for me

Haha.
I guess you've made me realize that I must like their work more than I previously thought. Having this discussion made me put in BROKEN EAR RECORD about 20 minutes ago and it does have its moments. It's a mess, but occasionally it does something cool. Like I've probably said elsewhere, experiments aren't failures if you learn something from them. I'm glad they're doing this stuff, I just hope they take all these little things they're doing and make (another) masterpiece out of them one day. |
