Eén van die optredens is de Europese première op maandagavond 31 januari in LantarenVenster van ‘Sight Unseen’ waarin Sonic Youth-voorman Lee Ranaldo live speelt bij beelden gemaakt door filmmaakster Leah Singer.
So Sight Unseen are images by Leah Singer accompanied with Lee Ranaldo's play. |

Current ticket status: - Got my own ticket for the January 31 show. - Might get a guestlist+1 for the same show, so Tokolosh and his friend can film it. - Picked up 4 tickets for the awards ceremony on February 4th: EvdWee, Tokolosh + friend, me. They had a massive stack behind the information desk, so it might be prudent to arrive early at the venue in case $number_of_tickets >> $venue_capacity. |

Yeah well, after 17:00 o'clock I meant. Not everyone can sneak away from work during office hours.
Oude Luxor holds 900 or so, there should be plenty of tickets. edit:I thought it said only 2 per person though? |

Lee will be in Rotterdam for a week as a juror for the IFFR International Film Festival Rotterdam. While he’s there he’ll do 2 performances: together with Leah Singer he will present Sight/Unseen, a large scale indoor work for 3 projection screens, 4 track tape, 2 gong players and suspended gtr. This is a reprise of their work of the same name, outdoors, in Toronto last October. Performance will last 90 minutes or so (not 10 hrs this time!) and start at 9pm. Tickets are 5€, and can be bought at the IFFR box offices. LantarenVenster, Address: Otto Reuchlinweg 996, Rotterdam. There is a second, 20 min performance with some short films by Japanese director Tomonari Nishikawa (which are also being shown at the festival) on at the Festival’s Awards Ceremony on Feb 4. You might find some information about this (and more on the festival) here.

played some records yesterday in the new LantarenVenster. Liked it. Also met Carlos.
Also had a look at the venue where Lee Ranaldo and one day later the Ex will perform. Will be awesome. |

Wow, Sight Unseen has a great setup with the suspended guitar, the three screens and two gong players. When people entered the room the film was already screening. People gathered around the light spot above the guitar and when a voice demanded people to sit down, half of them, including me, actually did. Seems I was gonna shoot this performance sitting down, which was a good thing I think afterwards. Acorrding to Lee this performance was quite different then the one from Toronto.
After 5 minutes Lee made 'acte de presence' and started swirling the guitar around as it was dangling above the heads of the people sitting down. Definitely a hard task trying to follow it with my camera. I was especially very amazed by the first 20 minutes of the performance where Lee's actions integrated nicely with the background film of backwards firework and so much more. A lot different then the Drift performance. Lee also removed the guitar from it's string to go into the crowd and was using his amps on each side of the wall to generate more noise/sounds. After about 55 minutes Lee finished it off and left stage leaving the, again suspended, guitar hanging in the center. As a conclusion of the gig people approached the guitar using cellular phones and stuffed animals to generate more sounds, maybe to hope for a Lee encore. Afterwards I heard from Lee that this was also part of the Toronto gig where people did this in the middle of the concert. In the end had a great shoot, was happy to meet Rappard and Pokkeherrie and Rappard and me got to chat some more with Lee backstage. I will hopefully have a video up soon. |

That's what I really liked about it... I was going in kind of expecting to see a similar thing like Drift, but this was totally different. Heh, when he took the guitar off and then later reattached it I was kinda worried whether he had secured it firmly, because it was swinging right over my head. I was wondering if the audience participation afterwards was intended or not, but either way it was cool to "play" Lee's guitar... how many people can say they've done that? Lee was taking a picture of audience members playing his guitar, it was funny to see the roles of both audience and artist completely reversed. edit: would be great if you get a video up, Jeff. I brought a small camera myself, but forgot to charge the battery. |

i really liked it. was a bit at the back of the room, but liked the shift between the repetitive score and images.
missed the end part though... |

Lee told us that he expected the crowd to participate halfway through the performance when he left stage for a short while. Glad I caught some of that on video at the end. Got a day off today, will check my footage this evening. |

You're DJ-ing in the lobby, right? Do you know what time The Ex will be playing tonight? I've been kind of avoiding them ever since GW Sok left, but when I finally did see them in the new lineup at ATP I was happily surprised how good they still were. They still have a lot of quality. I'd be up for seeing them tonight, but it just says 21:00 - 2:00am in the schedule... if they're playing around midnight or so then I won't bother. |
