Here is a little bit of what my Armchair Guide to Nick Cave says about the Boots single:
"A limited edition (1,000-1,500 copies). Nancy Sinatra may have created kitsch with 'These Boots Are Made For Walking,' but Cave's snotty, off-key version served as a fitting recorded debut for the Boys Next Door...'Boots' was present in the band's live set, and Cave averred that 'we used to play that song, and I think they considered it to be a favourite for us to record.' In an interview in 1983, Rowland S. Howard recounted how neither he nor the band were particularly enthused by the song's selection. 'That was sort of a record company idea more than anyone else's.'"

i never really liked birthday party, his lyrics are boring and try to be too important. the guitar i find occasionally interesting but thats all.

I remember listening to John Peel's show when he used to play The Birthday Party. He used to play all types of music, including hardcore punk, industrial, reggae, you name it. But I remember once him saying that he never got such abusive and threatening mail about any other band than BP.
I think the punks couldn't understand it. Goes without saying: one of the best bands ever. |

Creepy as hell, but one of the greatest punk rockers of all time. A largely unsung hero in the history of music.

Haha no need to duck. I love the birthday party but the bad seeds goes further into sonik nooks I think. But yeah, BP is one of my favorite musical happenings.

I also a big fan of the Birthday Party. I seem to remember Peel saying the Cuban Bros got a similar volume of hate mail. Pookie, are you old enough to know if Peel ever played the first wave of industrial stuff? I've never heard if he was interested in Throbbing Gristle and the like. I see the Birthday Party as following a similar trajectory. I gave up on punk completely around the time I first heard the Birthday Party.

That is quite all right. They were much better than they're usually given credit for. I mean sure, they are credited for originality, but it seems like people say that in a way meaning, "Well they really influenced a lot of great bands that would come afterwards," as if the Birthday Party weren't great enough for them, and were only supposed to act as a sort of foundation. But that just ain't true, as we've established over and over in this thread already.
