i think it would be good as an SYR, not sure about a proper SY album, it has the potential both to be completely amazing or complete utter shite.

sonic youth can do no wrong. i'd buy an album of nothing but them sucking farts out of each others ass's and think it was the most amazin gthing ever. well, maybe not think it was amazing, but i'd def buy and like it.

I guess I can see where Kim was coming from if there are actually so many people on their own damn board who don't get why that would be an awesome thing to do and totally true to the spirit of Sonic Youth. Nonetheless, they didn't listen to the numbskulls who told them that doing a synth album was a bad idea, and we thankfully got The Whitey Album as a result. A whole album of "Providence" and "Secret Girl"s wouldn't be that amazing, but if they pushed the piano the way they've pushed the guitar, it could be a really awesome record. It's a rather safe bet that it would be a lot more like Fennesz than Red Hot Chili Peppers (wherever the fuck that came from...)

Yeah, that's why I said .................. "Huh"
Red Hot Chili Peppers? ............ Anyway, I think this would be great probably. Can you imagine them just playing straight piano versions of some of their riffs? Would be some wild shit. TROUT MASK REPLICA was completely composed on piano!! The piano rules. |

My friends Eet have some piano guts in their studio, which is totally cool. You can bang on the strings without any keys. Prepared piano where you fuck with the strings is essentially what SY do with guitars, and it's actually a lot easier to do than with a guitar. I'm sure Kim was just like, "But what would I do??" And Thurston probably suggested she play dulcimer, and that was it for the whole idea... |

Sincerely, if they did a piano album, would you listen to it as much as their other albums ? It's a good idea for a SYR album. Yeah, Trout Mask Replica was composed on piano, but not played entirely on piano (thank god)... |

w? i would if the music was good i dont get why people are writing off piano music without even hearing it? Its like you've got some sort of punkrock gene definciency syndrome where your brain can only enjoy music with guitars its stupid. The piano can produce some amazing intense fuckup sounds and moods. |

Man, I used to play the piano for 7 years, I'm fed up with piano, and I don't like it when it 's too much used in rock music, like Radiohead does, for instance.
It's my opinion, it's not the gospel truth. |

EXACTLY! To me, it would make total sonic sense for them to do something so out of character. |

Well, I've listened to some John Cage pieces more than some Sonic Youth guitar songs, so I could see myself listening to a piano only Sonic Youth album. If it's good, you know.
I don't see why people would write it off -- it could be awesome. The excellent band Bride of No No is a proggy no wave group who have songs of nothing but piano and it's amazing. |

I dont understand the concept of the piano as a boring instrument at all. As atsonic pointed out, John Cage. Along with the likes of Sun Ra, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Brad Mehldau, Dick Hymen and countless others that I would never refer to as boring.

I don't think any instrument is boring. Then again, I can listen to Judy Dunaway's "Balloon Music" (40 minutes of her rubbing a balloon) and not be bored in the slightest.
It's all about what you do with it -- it can just be a fucking TRIANGLE album and it'd probably be good if the artist was creative enough. |
