For me, the best Lydon material is the first Public Image album, because he wrote those songs for the Sex Pistols who didn't want to do them. They represent the best of both groups in a lot of ways.
Really though, I love both bands and couldn't begin to argue about one being better than the other. It'd be like arguing whether the Ramones or Sonic Youth is better (though obviously the same singer brings on the argument in the PIL vs. Pistols comparison). Arguably, PIL are just as influential as the Pistols in their own way when you look at how many bands would later mix punk with experimental electronic and "dance" beats. Neither group existed in a vacuum, however, despite Rotten's constant claims and implications to the contrary, and both were plenty influenced by other artists doing similar things too. |
