Michael Rother of Neu!/Harmonia
Tuesday, August 10th, 3pm - 6pm on Brian Turner's show WFMU 91.1 fm/90.1 fm/www.wfmu.org (stream/archive) As participants in the heyday of early 70's Krautrock go, Michael Rother's resume and contributions to the world of experimental music and progressive rock might be among the highest. He spent time as guitarist in a 1971 incarnation of Kraftwerk, then co-founded the legendary combo Neu! with Klaus Dinger. With a combination of studio manipulations with producer Conny Plank, Dinger's driving motorik drumming and Rother's spirited and textural guitar playing, Neu! created a body of music that weighed heavily across sections of classic and modern music cornerstones as diverse as Joy Division, PiL, Bowie, and an entire electronic music scene. He also was a member of Harmonia, joining Cluster's Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius, worked with Eno, and created a selection of solo recordings into the present time. Rother has been touring as Hallogallo 2010 using his past projects as a template for live performance, joined by Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth on drums, and Aaron Mullan of Tall Firs on bass. The trio recently performed during WFMU's broadcast at Primavera Sound in Barcelona, and have shows this week at Maxwell's, Lincoln Center, and in Philadelphia. Michael stops by Brian's show today joined by Steve and Aaron for an extended chat about his activities past and present, with a generous helping of excerpts from his great recordings. also a new hallogallo 2010 7" will be debuted on the program. |

7" sold out, t-shirts sold out, poster were 2 bucks and selling fast...
Lincoln Center god bless them for putting on these shows every summer but that place kills a lot of vibes with the boring lightshow (basically just turn on the lights and leave them on all night) and strict security ("move back to your seat!"). that being said, pretty damn good night of music. the opener Hermeto Pascoal also rocked it, I don't think that band stopped for a breath entire 50 or so minutes they played. also, god bless all the people in their 80s or 90s in the front, I hope I'm still in the pit at that age. Also, the toddlers and babies, they seemed to be having a heck of a time, judging by the bobbing heads, kicking feet and smiles on faces... |

I was at that Edinburgh gig. The review is pretty much spot-on - it was really fucking good, but Steve Shelley isn't Klaus Dinger, so everything was a little rockier and a little less metronomic. Wasn't the longest of sets either, Steve & Aaron both seemed a little unsure whether they were finished or not when they went off before the encore. Couldn't turn around without bumping into Scottish indie royalty either. Didn't buy the 7" 'cos they were £10 a pop.

I disagree. I thoughts the lights enhanced the show. The same it did with Manuel Gottsching in August 2008 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZjoBZJ2Bq8 Quote:
I was content to stay in my seat (until the final song) and experienced no problems. And there was that mad rush of everyone up front, so I didn't see any real negative security action (but that doesn't mean it didn't happen). I did experience it at the Rhys Chatham show (briefly) the following year. But after I hunkered down next to one of the "command towers" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLFFtYA8huc there were no additional "incidents" Quote:
On this I do agree. They were amazing. Quote:
Thank you! We can still kick it. Quote:
I'll look for you there. Quote:

I really excited about this lineup. Neu 86 is coming from Gronalnd in Germany for me. Re-worked and all. That album is wrapped in anticipation.
Dissapointed there is no Toronto show...
