Of course it's a gimmick -- what popular music isn't gimmicky?
He's hilarious, though. That's all that matters. Also, anyone that gets offended by what he says needs to get their head examined.

He had Triumph in one of his music videos later. It was all a joke/stunt/etc.
My favorite thing was when he had Elton John come out and play with him to show that he liked gay people or whatever and then in an interview later he said "wait I didn't know elton john was gay! Otherwise I wouldn't have had him play!" Which of course offended everyone EVER.... ...who responded by buying more of his albums.
