Avatar has a metascore of 83 based on 34 critic reviews. The movie magazine I read, Empire, has awarded it top marks. That's good enough for me.

i've been looking forward to it for months! screenplay was meh, storyline was alright, effects and characters and so on were awesome looking. Would love to live there.. Talk about dream girl, she is so damn sexy. Saw it regular, going to see it 3D later in the week probably.. Not sure if i'll go so well with that or not...

Another reason for you to like it is Sam Worthington, the English-born Australian actor. He was born in Godalming, Surrey, which isn't that far from where I live. |

I want it to flop. It needs to just so that Hollywood gets the message that people want more than just three hours of computer wizardry. Unfortunately though, I think Cameron and Hollywood's cynicism is justified. It won't flop because enough people don't want any more than three hours of computer wizardry.

Pfft! There are so many films out there that don't even have computer wizardry! And yet, schlocky films continue to be made and hoards of people go see 'em. Good luck with yr crusade! I rarely go see a movie in a theater (heck, I rarely even watch them at home any more). When I do, it has to be something pretty spectacular. And I'm even willing to forego the story if the visuals are worthwhile. I went to see Speed Racer for crying out loud--and it WAS visually very interesting. Horrible movie and pretty much only worth watching on a BIG screen to get the impact of the visuals. Some people tend to confuse a good spectacle with a good movie. When yr lucky, the come together.

Well said, akprodr.
The world is FILLED with indie/no budget/weird movies, no matter what's in theaters, and that's ALWAYS been like this. Theaters/hollywood/distributors etc want to make money, that's no mistery. |

I'm taking my son to see it in a few hours. he's 12 and not likely to expect as much from "art" as yr typical message board fauna would.
3d or not 3d. that is the question. |

I hope your son hates it and wishes to have watched Empire Strikes Back again, instead.

The arty farty retards who enthused over the perfect cure for insomniacs, "The Lives Of Others", will contrive hate over "Avatar". The pretentious cunts.

At 300 million to make it's got a ways to go not to be a flop. Sounds like the only thing that's going to save it the 3D effects from what people have been posting in here.

I don't want to rain on your parade, but it seems "Avatar" has made $73 million in it's opening weekend. That would make it the second-best opening in December ever in the US. Worldwide it's made $232 million. http://www.deadline.com/hollywood/fi...g-85m-weekend/ |

I'm going to avoid Avatar mostly because, from what I know of the plot, it sounds like a tedious and preachy reintroduction of anti-colonialism and ecology from a typically unsophisticated and blunt vantage of weak liberal sentiment in between laser beams and spaceship landing craft.
That is to say, I don't disagree that anti-colonialism is wrong. It's just that while blockbusters have often been excused of wrapping the obvious in spectacular imagery, this particular film tests the already ultra-relaxed standard of relevance. District 9 came out only four months ago, god damn it. As for those who are all up on the spectacle for spectacle's sake trip, I suggest you see Final Fantasy: A Spirit Within. It's a fully photorealistic cgi film which is, as far as I can tell, equal in quality to Avatar's. You won't have to put up with all that pointless live action. You shouldn't mind, though, that the story is out and out shit. |
