Tonight's my night to see the little fella.
The Pits: If your CCTV picks up a man in block 110 wearing a Sonic Youth t-shirt, please could you send one of your minions to upgrade him to a better seat. Thanks. |

'twas fucking brilliant. The only poor spot was that guest appearance by Elton John - completely ruined the flow of the show. Not to mention that he needed cue cards for the lyrics to "Long and Winding Road". Oh, and he dances like a bricklayer on smack.

Sure. Tons of things.
I juat never liked Prince. Overexposure to his ridiculous personae and awful guitar tone is inevitable when one lives Minneapolis. When people talk about stuff I like i am quite free with the effusive fanboy gushing. Edit: even had I been a fan, I can't believe anyone defends his current output. "Screwdriver?" Are you kidding me? Tripe. There is more than enough to criticize about his music that I don't even really need to mention the homophobic tendencies and the whole Jehovah's witness thing.... |

I told you Savage had such a way with words! Can't say I know anything about Prince's current or past (ten year) output. The above video is probably the first time I've seen him since he played the Super Bowl back in 07. However, I did think the horns were KILLER! Is the homophobic Jehovah's a Minnesota thing? I don't ever recall the National media mentioning Prince and those issues?? |

His conversion to Jehovah's Witness was pretty well publicized, and some of his recent output lyrically and interview wise been called out for questionable views on homo/bisexuality, which is especially hilarious to me given how his early work and notoriety was somewhat based in sexual ambiguity.

I had his first album when it came out and listened to it on cassette on my walkman until the tape wore out, actually I think this dates back to my radio shack handheld recorder, prewalkman, you kids have no idea. My point is I don't recall any ambiguity about sex, it was 100% YES! |

Guy is free to become who he wants to be. People get images in their heads of who artists "are" and then fail to let artists change as people do. Artists are people, not concepts. As to prince, people don't have to like him or his music, it just seems odd that people wouldn't! at the least, lets respect the craft of what he does, if anything, prince is master craftsman of music, much like the approach of Frank Zappa, while it sometimes appears what folks aren't anticipating, at the least, there is always a lot of thought and effort put into it. prince never phones in his music unlike a lot of other artists who start to succumb to going through the motions. Personally, I don't dig Jehovah's Witness or their cult, BUT, I can't hate on prince if that is where he is going, just like I don't hate on any of y'all who dismiss religion entirely. Interesting that the trolls call me "god botherer" when I've never bothered anybody about it all, I'm not particularly into proselytizing, sharing possibly, but we all share who we are here.

I am perfectly OK with liking an artist's work and separating that from the person. I like Dali and I like Burzum and I like David Smith, none of whom are people whose views or behavior I would endorse wholeheartedly.
HOWEVER, I first and foremost dislike Prince's entire aesthetic. I wouldn't think it would be that hard for even the most die-hard Zappa fan to admit that the music is masterfully executed, but that reasonable adults can VERY EASILY take issue with matters of taste regarding Zappa's choices. Many master players are tasteless. Prince is a tasteless player who knows his way around a fretboard very well. Yes, he can shred, but his guitar tone is awful and the music he makes is highly irritating to me. Taste. It is a matter of taste. I have heard the vast majority of his output and I have liked MAYBE two songs. I would also argue that he is very much phoning it in these days and riding his own coattails while fleecing a sycophantic fan base who will say that everything he shits out is a work of genius. He has not made a truly decent record in 20 years (this is me being generous), and is getting by on inertia at this point. Again, I bring up that atrocious recent single "Screwdriver." Tell me that piece of crap measures up to the work that made his name. |
