that's what my friends have called me since the 80's
"the instigator" I have mellowed out in my old age. I used to start too much shit.

I never said it was deep. And 9 years later I still love it. Beautiful film. It's trashy and hilarious and violent and never takes itself seriously. It never adds up to anything. It's like a John Waters movie for the 21st century, and it reminds me a lot of the trashy 80's films I love like Liquid Sky. The penis cutting with the strobe light at the end is actually really disturbing. And driving into the sunset, listening to Slowdive, is indescribably beautiful. Not every film has to have a "point". As long as a film is entertaining and funny, what else does it need?
I think he refined a lot of the techniques he used in the Doom Generation for Nowhere which is about a hundred times more beautiful and disturbing, especially that fucking ending! But yeah I'm a big Araki fan, he really knew what he was doing. |

RE: Doomed Gen; isn't "to entertain" a valid "point" for a film to have?

the whole point was that I dod not find it funny in the least nor entertaining. that is ALL I care about in movies. entertainment. I get my deep thoughts from books. I thought doom generation was one guy jerking off on celluloid and claiming it to be art. it was bullshit of the highest order and I wanted to crush the skull of whoever made such a piece of trifling tripe with my bootheel. but as long as you got off on it....

NR: Yeah but not for everybody.
In fact, most people seem to like films that aren't entertaining. Like Lord of the Rings, King Kong remake, The English Patient, and various other shit films. |

I don't think Doom Generation was trying to be "Art". Trust me, the director is way too smart for that... It's just a trash film. Nothing more. It's supposed to be trashy and terrible. It's technically a bad movie, but there's something about it that makes it rise above the muck. I just love its curious lack of abandonment from any kind of script. Every time it starts to coalesce into a recognizable story, it completely changes. A trashy road movie with a little bit of a budget. Pretty wild stuff. Sorry you didn't find it entertaining!

This is a weird thread. Tonight I'm going to have nightmares of Rob Instigator spooning coke up !@#$%'s ass while Christina Applegate does me from behind.

I never personally thought Christina Applegate was hot. It's like Alicia Silverstone and .. uh .. Kerri Hoskins or whatever, the chick who played Sonya Blade in the Mortal Kombat games. Just not hot.

1. LOTR/King Kong were terrible. I'm waiting for P. Jackson to be awesome again (which was the bulk of his filmography -- prettty much everything other than those).
2. Trash films are an aquired taste, I suppose. I love trash films. My wife and I grew up on USA UP ALL NIGHT, and in fact, one of our hobbies is collecting VHS copies of all those UP ALL NIGHT films, and then we watch double features of them from time to time. Incredible trash. Almost always super-exciting. 3. Christina Applegate was/is hot. |
