Isn't Anything is much more personable and honest. To my ears on Loveless they were trying to make some groundbreaking, profound statement and with the obsessive attention the guitar sound etc lose the rawness and emotion of Isn't Anything... I dunno, just trying to think why I almost never play Loveless but Isn't Anything always gets a spin.

To me,Loveless is one of those ''essential'' records, that isn't that essential. In all fairness I think its essential to a lot of people for the wrong reasons, and I base this off comments I hear about it and the context of the conversations. Its cool if you think Loveless is the best shit to shake yr thalmus to, but, don't stop after Loveless. That's all.
With that being said, I like Isn't Anything better. |

loveless is clearly much better IMO, isn't anything has good songwriting but lacks from bad production, even KShields says it doesnt sound anywhere near what he would have wanted.
I think some of the "hipsters" claim isn't anything to be better just to be different because loveless has received so much acclaim. |

LOVELESS is really really good. In some ways it's more interestingly recorded than it is even something awesome to listen. I agree that everyone should have it. But I only listen to it like a few times a year. MBV is sort of the epitome of phrase "over-rated."

i wasn't trying to gain hipster points or whatever by starting this thread, but rather so I could share the insight that I gained, a sort of epiphany, while stumbling upon "Isn't Anything" and thinking that it might be better than loveless

I prefer Isn't Anything to Loveless because it just has more depth. Loveless for the most part is just riff, verse, riff, verse, extended riff. IA actually has choruses, bridges, better hooks, just all around better songs and thus a better record.
I still enjoy Loveless, but will say along with OK Computer it's the most overrated record of the 90s. I'd enjoy it so much more if so many people weren't always talking about how perfect it is, especially considering Isn't Anything is RIGHT there and is a better overall record. Both records have their certain charms though, I think. Of course, if you take some of the tracks from the EPs Glider and Tremelo, like say Off Your Face, Honey Power, and Don't Ask Why, then it's a much better record, still not maybe as good as Isn't Anything, but better than what it is now. ~Jeremy~

Yeah, OK Computer blows. I like maybe 3 songs on it. What a boring, shitty record.

no no, i was not implying that. i just hate it when people think they can't favourite an album just because it's the band's most popular work and they must be different blah blah. Isn't anything is a great album, and thats awesome if you truly do enjoy it more My bloody valentine is my all time favourite band (tied with SY) so forgive me for being a bit defensive. All i can say is that once you see them live, you know what all the hype is about. Their past concert this year literally changed my life and the way i think of music. |

I just personally find a lot of Radiohead stuff to be a bit dull and hard to listen to. I really love Kid A and like Amnesiac and most of Hail to the Thief, but everything else is just.. meh. Really creative and talented musicians but their songs just don't do anything for me usually.

I'm not crazy about HAIL.
In hindsight, of course KID A and AMNESIAC (AMNESIAC especially) are far better albums than OK. But when OK dropped (I was 16 I think) it was like this really amazing record to me. Really f'd some S up for me --> will explain better/further in a future NR ESSENTIALS post. BUT yeah, AMNESIAC is my favorite.

I think paranoid android, exit music, and lucky are all brilliant songs. I bought the album when I was 13 (several years after it came out, though), and it just didn't do much for me then, or now. On the other hand, Kid A (bought the next year) blew me away forever.

"Airbag" is incredible, me thinks. Of course I was already obsessed with a (at the time, rather unknown) DJ Shadow -- so their tribute was great.

I maintain that (chaos is the future and) Loveless would've made an incredible EP.
