okay okay. a couple of years ago he put together one motherfuckingly good "classic" hardcore compilation he *cough* shared with some of us. i also know he used to be a straight edger-- hopefuly no more, ha ha, but still, he used to be, with the painted X on his hand & all-- like that bunch of people this past weekend-- and to top it all, the guy knows music like few people do in this board-- maybe only the clone & some other ancients surpass him-- so with all that, i figured he'd have some interesting things to say on this subject. though he's in mexico, which is another cultural galaxy, but still, maybe he's the next byron coley, ha ha, minus the beard i hope.

Yeah, Mr Neurotic has an incredibly broad taste. He's heavily into his metal and hardcore, but also into loads of other shizzle, which is rare for a metaller. He's an encylopedia of metal/ extreme music though.

Hardcore never went away, the kids have been playing in basements and garages and small spaces since I can remember. When I lived in Vermont in the late 90's there were always shows going on, there was a space in Burlington where i saw Iceburn (in their jazzy stage, not their crunch stage) and there was a teen space in Brattleboro that was always having punk shows. Here in NYC there are weekly shows at ABCNO RIO and everytime I'm visiting the family in Maine I see shows advertised around Portland and New Hampshire.

But in the 90's you had all the Lookout and Billy Joe shit going quadruple platinum, and there's commercial bands that sort of hardcore sound (more of a cheap mosh metal with expensive gear really) but the singer starts singing the lamest lovey dovey lyrics. I want to kill him. Or worst, shitty rap pus.

For me, hardcore went down a dead end alley with "crust", its a one idea one sound, near tuneless guitar blur, the same fucking drum beat and a singer with less melody than a deisel engine. i think there is a similarity with some of the contemporary noise scene. People make a lifetime career out of one idea. Well , it keeps it simple and predictable for everyone. Or, they pour some kind of food product over the audience and themselves and the next day the blog-dogs are shouting "brilliant and genius"!

For me, the Negative Approach reunion was probably the most important event in American music last year. That and the Rhys Chatham tours.

Timmy Kids!!! I live above a bar that caters specifically to these kids! It's like a fucking costume party every night. What a bunch of poons.

Anyway, do you get the creeping suspicion that these "Timmy" boys are all racists? I mean besides the fact that they were all skinheads 8 years ago. Doesn't it seem weird to hearken back to the time immediately before the acquisition of Civil Rights for blacks and the Women's Movement? And to acknowledge nothing that came after it? I know some people just really like West Side Story, but maybe they should examine why they long so for that particular America. Oh well, I feel like I'm swimming in a sea of these people, had to get that off my chest.

my roommate last year was fashioncore. to this day hearing panic at the disco makes me want to kill.

i like some of the old school HC (minor threat, black flag, etc) but i never really got into anything more recent. just as well since i get beat up at punk shows cos i'm a skinny little white boy with long hair. the whole hardcore thing going on right now has nothing to do with hardcore, it's just nu-metal kids with asymmetrical haircuts.

My name is !@#$%!. I went to this party in a basement and these bands were playin' hardcore music. The crazy thing is I had just watched a documentary called American Hardcore. Creepy, right? So naturally I immediately thought to myself that this must surely be a trend and that hardcore was making a huuuuge comeback.

I wasn't aware that playing (usually very bad) hardcore in basements at parties ever went away, !@#$%!. When did it ever become a novelty to remark on as such?

Dudes and dudettes,

I went to a party and this group was playing old-school metal.
This surely means that metal is making a comeback. A huge comeback, mind you, and one worth remarking on here at the forum.

Everyone should know that metal is back because I saw this band at this party. Besides, I had just been watching Kiss Meets the Phantom in the Park and some Iron Maiden videos! That's just, like, too eerie, ya know?

But then, check this out...I went to a party and this band was playing an 800-year old Chinese zither, an accordion and a shortwave radio. Surely this must mean that avant-garde will now replace the mainstream!

The fact is that bands will always be playing hardcore (and metal too) in basements.

See, if you were talking about Happy Hardcore I guarantee you you wouldn't've had this lamentable bitching.

For my ten penneth, I've noticed that the cities are having more hardcore shows in the last couple of years. Meanwhile, the small insular towns are continuing to have the same hardcore following they've had since I can remember.
