second listen to this and it sounds even worse. like...there's absolutely NOTHING in these songs, and the few times it sounds alright, it just kinda sits there and doesn't progress into anything interesting whatsoever. just a monumental disappointment tbqh. i'm just glad i was only anticipating it for a few days and i'll probably forget about it in a month or so.

exactly man. No depth. No heart. Cold, lifeless, what else to expect from instant studio creations?
The whole thing, like IN RAINBOWS, comes off as contrived, silly, and rushed. People are going to be paying like $400 for this?! I guess the biggest problem I have with this record is how damn REPETETIVE it is. The beats aren't compelling, though some are kinda strange and interesting for a minute. And then they just layer sounds over top, and Thom moans. End of song. |

I hate to say it but upon first listen it didn't really do it for me. I don't mind the lack of guitars now and then, and I came to really dig "Kid A" and "Amnesic" but I expect Radiohead to keep trying different things. It seems they have gotten too comfortable with their sound. Soft, melodic, but not adventurous, which is what I want Radiohead to be. "Kid A" was adventurous, "King of Limbs" is just, redundant.

I love it. It's like hail to the thief + amnesiac, but in a more mature, not-in-your-face way. I'm not sure what people were expecting, but I was expecting something like this, it seems like the natural progresson from where they were at.
You can't expect something to have as much impact as it did before, especially in a grandiose way but this is pleasant, interesting and mature, i also think there's a lot of details that you pick up as you listen and it definitely grows on you. I'm kind of curious to what people were expecting, and I kind of suspect they'll be releasing the "rest" of it soon. Now there's the thing that it truly isn't as melodically strong as they usually are, but it doesn't bother me. I agree some songs aren't that inspiring (I never liked house of cards, tho it's a good song), but even their worst songs are good. It's hard when you have such great stuff to compare them to, but if anyone else had made this album I think everyone would like it and be way less critical? It probably won't be my favorite, but it's certainly a good album. I kind of think a lot of the people who didn't like it will change their minds about it.

good points knox. though i didn't think they would dip back into the electronic style as much after In Rainbows "return to rock". one thing i don't get is how people can pass judgement about a radiohead album after only a couple listens. it usually needs a minute to soak in.

mkay, been listening to this quite a few times and same response as latest Mogwai LP : very underwhelming. Not one song really caught my attention (unlike Nude or 15 steps or Weird fishes on In Rainbows).
I'm no Radiohead huge fan so i don't mind that much; but they're kind of sitting on what they've been buiding so far in a very self-indulgent/comfortable way...IMHO. Still a nice listen though. |

The main problem most people probably have is how "fresh" and "new" and "Exciting" every Radiohead album is supposed to sound in comparison to the one before it. This sounds like a step back, if anything. I think most people are simply comparing this to the Radiohead albums they like. I'm not a huge fan of the band, period, but I can appreciate them. This album is just pretty dull; drum machine, 4 or 5 little glossy sounds layered, Thom whines, end of song. I've sat through it 3 times and think it's a lot better than IN RAINBOWS actually. I didn't at first, because I don't like either album very much, but IN RAINBOWS is just impossible to sit through, I think it's possibly the most boring album ever recorded. Both albums kinda suck though, in their own way. This reminds me of a very minimal, cold ambient record. That's the only way I can treat it, since the songs are so empty. It's almost like a PAN SONIC record (not literally, but in its coldness and its use of minimalism). Certainly a ballsy move for them to make, when you consider something like OK COMPUTER and KID A and how intricated and layered their productions are. Of course, most people are going to argue that it's just them being lazy. All in all, it just feels like a pretty lifeless album. Not a lot to take from it. I'm glad it's really short though. I guess it's just depressing for most people that a band that wrote intricate brilliant music like PARANOID ANDROID and PYRAMID SONG.. is now going down the "cold icey electronic repetition" route. I mean, the songs don't even sound written, they sound like 8 little studio creations. There's just not a lot here to like. |

Also, this board seems pretty polite and respectful, compared to most of the opinions I've seen out there, regarding this album. I read a few facebook posts and blog posts about this album and people are just so hell bent on hating it. Kinda funny. It's not the worst album ever, there's just not much to it at all imo. Just something to put on while you wash dishes maybe.

So basically it's just about expectations, and not really about the album. Because I can understand why someone would think this is not their best album, but I cannot understand why someone would think it's bad - it's not a bad album at all. As for new, fresh, exciting, groundbreaking no one can do that every time. It certainly doesn't have the impact kid a had on me many years ago, but it's a nice album, especially if you don't have all these "radiohead" expectations when listening to it and just take it for what it is. Most people I've heard seem to be upset because they can't sing along to it, pretty much. Not very melodic, no anthems.

Well, that's part of the reason why I tried to keep my expectations to a minimum for this one. I understand why people would hope for something like that, but at this point it's really not what I'm trying to find on Radiohead. Kinda like my experience with Sonic Youth and The Eternal... King of Limbs may or may not mean that their "golden days" have passed, but as long as I'm enjoying it, there's no problem with that. |

that's exactly what i was looking for. you hit the nail on the head. i couldn't explain that to someone before. i think that might be why some people hate it (that, and because it's suddenly so pro-radiohead to be anti-radiohead) i had lotus flower and separator stuck in my head all day at work today. so, if you give the album a decent amount of listens, and appreciate the melody - it'll stick |
