This really says a lot, especially coming from someone that only recently discovered Curtis Mayfield. Not that there is anything wrong with that within itself...but still, "ignorant"???...come on, please.

I would no doubt have heard of him sooner if I was black and living in a ghetto in the US. Unfortunately I'm white and living in a leafy suburb of Middle England. |

Dude is from Chicago. Chicago musicians were notorious for appealing to white + black, rich + poor audiences at large. From the blues of Muddy Waters + Buddy Guy, to the funkier vibes of Curtis M. And reality is, if you go into American ghettos these days you'll be hard pressed to find many people that listen to Curtis, or even funk period. Almost never will you find anyone that listens to blues. So yes, I'm saying at this day in age that mostly (certainly not only) middle class white people are listening to Curtis. Black America is notorious (that word, again) for consistently being "progressive" when it comes to music. It's been that way since their arrival. It's not that they (generally) have a lack of appreciation for older stuff...it's just that they are always wanting something new. Turn on hip hop radio, they aren't playing the same stuff they were as little as three weeks ago. To where most rock stations are playing the same shit they were 25 years ago. Research a little more before spreading even more ignorant posts like AIDS. You almost never seem to know anything even about the topics you yourself start.

Then you're being silly. I'm sure there are older generations within Black America™ who can appreciate Curtis, whether it be his solo material, his work with the Impressions or all the hits he wrote for other people (namely Aretha, the Staples Singers), or material he's sampled on.. but it's not like everyone is funking all the time. James Brown still endures though, I gotta say. He never gets old for B-boy shit and I still hear him played regularly as an accompaniment when entertaining kids get on the subway "IT'S SHOW TIME."
The same thing sort of happens when (largely white) dudes buy up old blues comps and think "FUCK YEAH MAN," head on down to the Delta expecting to find everyone sitting on their porches singing about how this ole world's in a helluva fix...when all they come across are dudes blasting Lil Wayne and Slipknot. |

I don't know a single black person who gives a shit about Curtis. Because, y'know, he's not really 'black' black so much as he is a musician who happens to be black. Though he's by no means as white as, say, Hendrix, who no black people I've ever met have liked (because, essentially, Hendrix is music for white people).

Nothing I stated was opinion....it's just the way things have been, as well as the way they still are. "The prettiest color ever is seafoam green" = opinion "green is a color" = fact.

Hendrix is slowly becoming more popular with black audiences. "Nobody Cages Me" is a new bio on Jimi, written by a black guy (Corey Washington). But true, during his life he was shunned by many (not all...) other "black" blues musicians (esp. during the earlier portion of his musical journey...something that started changing toward the end). He'd jam with them, play gigs with some of them, but they never really dug 'em enough to give him proper credit for whatever reason. White British people made him popular... I remember reading something about Son House bashing his style of playing a bit. Saying it wasn't blues or some shit (I love Son House, but disagree with his remarks as many earlier blues musicians, including but not limited to Johnny Jenkins + Buddy Guy...were pulling Hendrix-esque moves many a years earlier, before Jimi hit the scene, and were also getting shit for it as well) And while I'm sure yr being sarcastic, I just wanna say that Hendrix wasn't creating music "for white people"...that's absurd. Band of Gypsies are loud testimony to what he was wanting to do.

Well, I can't stand Hendrix, but that's a bit 'whatever'. How about I modify the statement to 'Hendrix isn't music for white people, he's music for boring people, some of whom happen to be white'?

Boring people?
Hendrix was, and in some ways is still way ahead of his time. Totally revolutionized not only blues, but rock n roll period. Whatever. To each their own.

Well, yeah, but have you ever met anyone who liked Hendrix who wasn't a total bore?

Music shouldn't be judged by the fans of the music. But of course I have. Millions of fans, certainly not all of them are boring? 'Course ya got the lame hippie-throwback sorts. But whatever. You've got these sorts when it comes to most anything. And yr an idiot if you think I don't know what yr doing.

Rob + Satan are both Hendrix fans. I find them both to be very interesting.
