The allocation of all the tapes was done randomly. I put all the names in a bag & pulled them out (without looking). Because of the UK bias, some tapes from the UK stayed here. But for those people in the UK receiving a tape from the UK, I'll make sure you get one from somewhere else next time. This will affect the cost of postage, so I'll try to even it out after a few rounds.
I'll show you my spreadsheets if you want to see them. |

I'll also post a picture of the bag I used if anybody's interested. It was from Boots.

sonicl Yes and no. I've listened to the first side a few times now and there are tracks I know and had forgotten I loved, some I should know but don't, and some I have no idea about. But there isn't a single track on Side One that I'm not enjoying. So we start off with the theme from The Magic Roundabout. Nice, you must have known that it would bring a feeling of warmth and comfort to a man of my age. Then straight into Age of Chance and Kiss (the Prince song, not a collaboration). I loved AOC. They produced a handful of fantastic records before doing this cover version, which they milked for all it was worth. I've got the 10" and two different 12" mixes, including a one-sided 12", and I don't think that was all. It was their first real success and a series of great records followed. Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Noise? was a particular favourite of mine. Then they signed to EMI I think and were moulded into a well-groomed pop act with very little success. These were the days when there was a much clearer dividing line between mainstream and "alternative" music, and if an alternative band were signed to a major label, it was deemed necessary to change them into something more palatable to a wider audience (see also Big Stick, The Primitives and countless others). Pop Will Eat Itself. A live track, can't remember what it's called but it's the one with the Mel & Kim sample. I should have added PWEI to the guilty pleasures thread because really they were incredibly naff but I loved them. They were great live and made some great fun music. I like them from their grebo roots, and remembered being really surprised by Box Frenzy with its hip hop beats and sampling. It sounded completely unique. Hey, maybe not so naff after all. I don't know the next track. Can't even make a guess. A good bit of lo-fi pop punk. I would guess early 80's. I've listened to it a few times and think I should know it and it's so good, why haven't I heard it before? Ohio Express's Yummy Yummy Yummy but by who? Sounds like Royal Trux, or the vocals certainly sound like Jennifer. I'm probably completely off the mark on this one. Makes a good noise though. More later. |

The cover of Yummy Yummy Yummy is by L7, from SST's "The Melting Plot" compilation. |

I'm really enjoying the Andy Watch Out track. It's got a real 60's garage feel, a bit like The Prisoners but better.
I suppose the L7 does rock out a bit too much for RT. Then we have another good track which I don't recognise. Sounds very early 80's British punk. I loved all this stuff at the time. I think it's not melodic enough for Angelic Upstarts, too good to be Chron Gen, not heavy enough for UK Subs...I give in. The Primitives with what is I presume an early version/demo? of Crash. For a brief couple of months I loved them (oh Tracy, those pencil skirts!), Really Stupid was a particular favourite. |
