Yeah my bad, until convinced that is.

Well, it's still early. Lots of good electronic shit.

Also, Cruel Winter is still listed as a first quarter release on Wikipedia. I'm sure that's bullshit, and it wouldn't be a masterpiece anyway — just methadone for the addict. But it would be something.

Part of me thinks Kanye might be done. Thank GOD OR SATAN OR CTHULHU OR WHATEVER that I finally got a chance to see him.

I'm fucking blessed man.

Truth.

Last year was just a what-the-fuckathon for hip-hop fans of all stripes. I mean, seriously, think about it, no matter what you were into, there was shit for you in 2016.

• Drake bitches, fools and boring white people had Views.
• Southern rap fiends had an endless supply of new shit from everyone from Kevin Gates to Lil Yachty to, like, three fucking albums from Young Thug (culminating in what's easily his best, even if I'm still not on board (JEFFERY).
• If you're into Future, he dropped an album like two months after his last album.
• If you're into backpack-and-a-Benz shit, Chance was ERRRRVERYWHERE. Unfortunately I really don't like Coloring Book as much as Acid Rap, but whatever.
• People who hate modern hip-hop, or just love '90s hip-hop, got new album by Common that also happens to be his best in years. Not to mention a motherfucking brand new certified classic from the genre's most influential group after 18 years of silence (Tribe).

• And for folks like me (and I think also you and louder), who want more than just solid beats, or technical bombast, and who appreciate the value of erasing genre boundaries and doing novel, challenging shit, there was of course The Life of Pablo, as well as untitled unmastered., and Blond(e). We Got it From Here... probably fits into this category as well, really, but it's more traditional than the rest.

I'm not really sure how anyone expected we'd bounce back from that. Not easily. It was like, we flew too close to the sun, the lot of us, and now we're walking around with singed feathers and sunburns, and everything feels kind of suckass.

It's like when Daydream Nation, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, And Justice For All, Nothing's Shocking, Surfer Rosa, Viva Hate, Land of Rape and Honey, the Great Adventures of Slick Rick, By All Means Neccesary, Hairway to Steven, etc. came out in 1988.

1988 was a BANNER year for awesome new sounds. Then it really petered out until around 1992 or so.....

A good album. Even though it's essentially just a bunch of P-Funk covers.

Can you imagine being interviewed by that guy though?
Like, after working your ass off all night, playing shows... I mean, I'm not saying they were cool with him (Thurston and Lee made particular asses of themselves, I'm sorry to say), but I kinda get it.

I had some friends that reminded me of Nardwuar when I was living in the Northwest. That shit gets fucking old. There are people who really do that kind of challenging, aren't-you-cool, scenster Jeopary! shit ... just constantly name-dropping counterculture shit, trying to prove something about themselves or whoever they're talking to. It's a bit infuriating.

Also, the tour with Neil was a crappy one for SY. But yes, Thurston and Lee were embarrassing. I think you just have to roll with it and be willing to laugh at yourself, without cracking, or becoming the butt of a joke, and that's hard for a lot of people to do, especially when they're on camera. But... yeah, kind of sad and embarrassing.

Doesn't change how I feel about SY though. How I feel about SY has almost nothing to do with the people... everything to do with the sounds they made together.

Ok, how I feel about SY does have quite a bit to do with how I feel about Kim Gordon, who was pretty civil to Nard in the interview I'm thinking of, if I remember correctly.

Love Kim.

Gotta say, though, I've been kind of on the fence about Thurston as a person for a while now. It's not just the Kim stuff, and the stuff relating to the divorce. It's other things too. He shared his "Cease Fire" video, like, no shit, fucking FIFTY times or something on Facebook. And I hate that "ironic cool-guy crooner" voice thug he does where it just sounds like he's making fun of other singers' self-seriousness and has been doing it for so long that he's no longer in on the joke. He does this in the interview I'm thinking of also. When he has nothing to say. And it's fucking stupid and childish and not even a little bit funny.

I think he's matured a bit (damn well should have by now, since he was almost my age when he did that '91 interview... Jesus!) and that's reflected in his political views. But he's also kind of a perpetual child, and that's also reflected in his political views -- or, rather, how he chooses to express them (calling people "nazis," speaking only to the people who already agree with him, not seeking any meaningful paradigm shift in political and social discourse.)

But yeah. I love Kim. And I love Lee too. And Steve. Thurston's music is still golden, but as a guy, despite being perfectly friendly and charming in person, he's not a great role model.

I get what you're saying. Nardwuar is an annoying dude, however his interviews are somewhat interesting because they show you a different side of the artist's personality, as they can really expose whether they're prone to anger issues and have a big ego.

I understand Thurston and Lee's frustration, but they really crossed the line when they acted like schoolyard bullies, which is inexcusable. Nas even called him "a fucking psycho", but at least he kept his cool which I respect a lot. Anderson .Paak just kept smiling and remained humble and chill throughout, even when Nardwuar tried to embarrass him.
