Though I hate the band, I will admit there are parts I like. Such as that one riff in Four Horsemen that is around 2:40 into the song. There's a cool cheesiness to it that makes it fun. I also like about a second of Master of Puppets when Hetfield goes: 'MASTER! -- MASTER!'.

I just listened to Death Magnetic again the other day, and it's still pretty good, though I don't understand why some people think it's Metallica backpedaling. OK, most of the riffs are pure 80s thrash, but some of the songs have some things I haven't heard the band try before, like six count rhythms (The Judas Kiss), ambient intros (That Was Just Your Life, All Nightmare Long), and some of Kirk's leads literally come out of nowhere-listen to it on headphones and they can really catch you off guard.
Megadeth: I won't come out and say they're better, but there are some things they do better than Metallica. Someone once said no one could write a meaner riff than James Hetfield, but I'd like to see him write a song as in your face as Wake Up Dead or Holy Wars...The Punishment Due, and even their most commerical album (Countdown to Extinction) is heavier than Metallica's at the time (the "Black Album"). On the other hand, Risk isn't much better than Reload...

Death magnetic is a master piece! I fucking love it. I grown up with em always loved them thier like a fine wine that grows better with age. I don't give a shit what anyone else thinks I was not expecting a new album that sounded just like all thier others. I was craving growth and change.
the day that never comes is great its about a woman in a torturous relationship with her husband its cool how they speak on such a feminine subject. i love the sounds they are what draw me in...but the words when i hear offchance a phrase so perfect i begin to love songs i did not care much for before

I think St. Anger would be great if the songs were all chopped down 3 or 4 minutes a piece, and the songs were faster. I kinda find the album interesting, since it's such a mess... the whole album is a big cut n paste job, put together from various jam sessions, the whole thing is disconnected as hell... it's so entertaining though because I just can't believe they released this album! The sewage pipe drum kit, and the fake arrangements that consist of Lars speeding up or slowing down... just really weird!
But honestly some of the guitar tones are really weird and awesome. If it were an ep, with the chopped up/sped up versions of the songs I just mentioned, it'd be kinda cool. I like Invisible Kid a lot; it has 17 riffs in it. 17! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8e1tchgMWdE invisible kid thrash edition |

Early Metallica is probably my favorite metal band of all time.
Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, ...And Justice for All ALL GREAT ALBUMS ! Especially RIDE THE LIGHTNING. They began to suck on The Black Album (which was decent though). St. Anger is bad BUT I kinda like the way the drums sound on that one and I really like the song "FRANTIC" - tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tock "MY LIFESTYLE DETERMINES MY DEATHSTYLE".

Nothing on St. Anger is better (albeit ironically) than James Hetfield's cackle on Dirty Window.

I gotta say, I put on the black album the other day and it rules -- in a completely different way than their early stuff but... it's dark as hell... the bass playing is great (and, whoa, you can actually hear it!).

Death Magnetic is a really shoddily produced album. But if you're a bit sympathetic to all-in-the-red recordings (which given SY's proximity to lo-fi and so on, is quite likely on SYG) it's pretty interesting. I don't really like it, but it's interesting that a band with such a high profile put out what amounts to a teenager's first experiment with making a loud record.
Funny Good article on the Mastering Wars I think the mastering wars is something that audiophiles get overly arsey about, but Death Magnetic really does sound like a pile of shite. Obviously, something like Burzum makes a virtue of the fact that it's produced 'badly', but I don't think that really applies to Metallica.

metallica - i loved justice for all when i was a kid, thought the drumming was insanely good but they kind of went wrong after that, even the black album didnt get me that much. some kind of monster is a work of unbridled mastery! spinal tap eat your heart out.
