I don't understand. There is apparently some backlash because this band is "hyped". But the fact is, this band has already written more great songs in just a little over a year, than most bands write in their whole career. I'm not going to argue that they're doing anything particularly original, but just the fact that they have awesome music is enough for me. Sure, it doesn't have a lot of substance, but it sure is neat. There's plenty of shit bands making bullshit music with no redeeming qualities whatsoever -- I'd rather go hate them instead of a band that's actually GOOD.
For example, I'm not a Wavves fanatic, but the dude writes solid little songs. Nothing groundbreaking or mindblowing and even occasionally boring.. but it's still good music. No reason to hate it, and I guess I just don't pay attention to whatever Hype Machine(c) everyone else is paying attention to (pitchfork?) to care about shit like that. |

I dunno. I guess once upon a time, I would grow frustrating when truly brilliant, original music like Make a Rising is overlooked in favour of some band doing the same ol' boring shit, but nowadays I don't give a fuck. First of all, a lot of people don't like anything "new", they like tributes of homages of ripoffs of commercialized versions of things that were considered "unique" 30 years ago. Taking the underground's best moments and turning it into a slick, commercial greatest hits version. Look at "punk", for example. Nothing has really changed in 30+ years (same 3 power chords, same fucking hooks, same structures, etc.) but nowadays it's everywhere, even in Target ads.
Still, this doesn't bother me, as I'm older and don't care that a 14 year old hipster might like the same band as me. Vivian Girls's music moves me, in spite of its percieved simplicity and unoriginality.. that, in itself, is quite special and worthy of attention (to me). |

I always wondered why people are so ashamed (not saying you are, just making a general statement) to like the same music as their 14 year old hipster little sister... yet they'll like the same MOVIES, the same actors, the same television shows, and so on.
I've never heard anyone say "Damn, The Simpsons -- that's too hip! Fucking my little Hot Topic brother likes it! Fuck that shit!" Yet any band that has any hipness attached to it is automatically castrated, in spite of their quality. Don't get me wrong, most of the hipster bullshit is hipster bullshit. But Vivian Girls are unique in that they write good songs. Something curious about the new album, dunno if anyone's noticed this or not: But you can actually hear everything they're saying on all the songs, for the first time. Not sure how I feel about that. I don't really pay attention to lyrics, but theirs in particular.. uh.. I'd rather not pay attention to. "La la I love you can't get over you you're so great I'm a lonely girl blah blah." Good thing they have pretty voices. |

Dude, you've been living under a rock. We all totally do that now. The Simpsons is fucking shit!
But to be serious actually that pretty much sums up my attitude altho i don't hate these things because 14year olds do i automatically know they are going to be shit because they are so mainstream. take for example that movie twilight - magically i know this to be shit without having seen it or knowing anything about it! isn't that neat! this attitude isnt a contrivance or anything, its more of a taste... i mean i dont HATE any of this mainstream culture. whenever i encounter any of it my brain simply automatically dismisses it with no emotion involved unless it is forced on me eg. pop song playing in a shop or billboards or whatever, then i usually do get angry and wish al qaeda would show up and slit the throats of everyone involved and blow up the newspaper offices and tv buildings etc. i don't watch television, ashamedly sometimes i watch lost or family guy online and am basically angry the whole way thru because they annoy me so much. but i can barely enjoy any culture anymore at all because i cant suspend my disbelief and imagine that is a valid worthwhile thing to do with the state of the world as it is. it just seems to be nothing but a distraction and not offer anything worthwhile to me. its hard to find anything where that i can even pay proper attention to without being annoyed at myself for not being able to give a shit. like the kind of shit people on here like... your still as much of an idiot spending your money on hunter s thompson books and limited run punk rock vinyl as you are spending it on computer games and jonas brother cd.s. |

Very interesting. I agree with a lot of those points... not all. I mean, I find most of my entertainment waaaaaaaay on outsider, no-budget art, but I dunno. Still, I enjoy me some hipster bullshit from time to time.
(oh, and, yeah, of course the Simpsons sucks now, but I'm talking the stuff from 10 years ago, which everyone still loves.. I think?!) |

i still like season 6 and 7 a bit, but i want to hate them, i mean, i want good reasons to hate them instead of a vague dissatisfaction with post modernism and the slacker/nuclear family outlook of the show.
i purposefully hate music like the v.u. and beatles and sonic youth (not that they make it hard) because i think its necessary if we are ever gonna move forward to loose the past and start in new directions. its important to hate. i judge all these cultural artifacts to have failed. that's the only way i can see to try to move out of this nostalgia fest. |

you dont have to like anything just because its good. you can just irrationally hate it, and sometimes good ideas and counter points come out of that hate. look at how much good music there is, do we really need anymore of that? making good music seems to be the easiest thing in the world now.
anyone on this board could make some good music, anyone on any board coulld prob i think it is precisely "good" music that should be hated now. |

I love on the song "The End" when, 1:30 in, they start to sing the chorus for not even a full measure and their voices completely drop out, so the guitar comes in and plays the chorus melody instead and then they go into the chorus for real. Brilliant.
