I Love You, Man.

Not going to say terrible. Just contrived and hacky. And of course, unfunny. If it were actually funny I could give it a pass.

Linked with the 'New French Extremity' films that've emerged over the last couple of decades (see also, Irreversible, Haute Tension, Martyrs, etc.), this went under the radar a bit, perhaps because, in comparison with those films it isn't actually that extreme - graphically anyway. It's essentially an erotic thriller; albeit one with shades of De Sade and Bataille to give it that philosophical air of transgression (which might ultimately be more central to the NFE 'movement' than any graphic displays of torture, rape, etc.) Anyway, in terms of recent trends in cinema, I do find this one probably the most interesting, even if the films themselves can be pretty hit and miss. I also think the more graphic end will eventually hit a dead end once it reaches (as it inevitably must) that final layer of taboo represented by actual, un-simulated violence (snuff) or sex involving children: areas that it simply can't touch. I suppose that's a problem whenever anything defines itself through graphic extremity: that it eventually reaches its legally defined limit. In that sense, because Choses secrètes emphasises extremity at the level of ideas rather than their graphic display, it may point to a more sustainable future for these kinds of films.

don’t have anything to add but just wanted to say it was really good to read this the other day and again today.

i might watch this if i can find it.

Thanks.

It isn't a great film (although I just noticed Cahiers du cinema made it their #1 film of 2002) For me it really just raised an interesting point about an interesting body of films. And it does star the almost impossibly beautiful Coralie Revel, who I could just sit and look at forever. So that helped.

Shape of Water looks like a backstory on Abe Sapien from the Del Torro Hellboy movies. Costume looks the same... origin seems roughly similar (amphibious beat in a lab/Hospital, feds and so on try to study him) ...

Just sayin’

Huh. I haven't seen it in a few years, but I've seen it a few times because I found a lot in it to appreciate. Only possible conclusion: you're completely wrong.

EDIT: Hahahaha I was thinking of I Love You Phillip Morris. Yeah, I Love You Man wasn't very great. You're completely right.

shit Ive seen recently
\

Kong Skull Island was fun the second time. I like it.

John Wick II, pretty spare story but john woo-esque ballet of the trans-visceral. Very entertaining.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 - Not as all around enthralling as the first, but a fun film. had a good time with it. They did not try too hard.

Star Wars Last Jedi - saw it at matinee in recliner leather seats. fucking fun movie. maybe the most enjoyable star wars film since empire. I loved it. I liked how the old star wars were typical hero tale shit, but this one was more true to life, where plans do not automatically suceed just because your motivations are good. Plus I liked pissed off Luke.

I actually agree.

I do not like Guardians in the comics. Not the “classic” Guardians, nor the newer Bendis Guardians on which the films are based. Not for me.

There’s some fun stuff, but mostly it’s just overly-quippy, loud, annoying bullshit. Like if a less-talented Aaron Sorkin wrote a comic book about a rag tag group of space fuckadoodles.

I can normally sit through just about any kind of comic book, no matter how stupid (you kind of have to have that ability if you want to read them at all), but I actually put GOTG down midway through volume 3 or 4. Just couldn’t take it anymore.

Oh hey, Rob, read Doomsday Clock ya bish!

Haven't seen this movie before. Sarah Polley is fucking great in it. Her story is the best out of the three. Other two were lame

I feel like Paramount doesn't deserve Annihilation being a hit after reading that news but a new sci-fi movie(non-sequel but being based on a book series so potential franchise) from Alex Garland in a follow up to the great Ex-Machina, with a great cast (Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, Oscar Issac) for Garland I want the film to do great even if Paramount doesn't deserve to reap the rewards of its success after this move.

Not to mention a score from Geoff Barrow of Portishead. Movie’s gonna be awesome. And fucked up. And too smart for people.

Blade Runner 2049 syndrome.

in a world where anti-intellectualism runs rampant and people are ignorantly proud of being ignorant, it makes sense a film stuido would think the movie is too "intellectual." what a joke. Thank goodness the director had final say in contract
