here's a challenge for y'all---name some SY tracks that fade out. not songs w/ some extraneous noise @ the end that fades, but ones that have no conclusive finish due to a fade. no demos or live tracks.
?

Good one! Yeah, I can think of a few that fade with the noise but I can't think of any at the moment that fade, like, on a repeated chorus or something. *thinks* RAIN KING, does that count?
I've never liked when songs fade out. It's just like "think of an ending! Just hit a crash cymbal! How you guys gonna play this live?" Of course, I've seen bands live where the sound mixer actually turns em down and so they fade out live. So weird. Not really a fade but my favorite ending is probably on CROSS THE BREEZE.. how it plays the beginning, it sounds amazing.. and there's that delayed thing going on in the background.. amazing. |

on that note, think of a song w/ a repeated chorus @ the end! (to be honest i didn't spend much time trying to think of one, but it seems like something that they probably wouldn't do, even on their more verse/chorus material...)

i'm pretty sure i disagree with all the suggestions (based on my criteria) except possibly 'genetic'. i'll listen to em and check. then probably come back and say i was wrong.

okay, i can't argue that those songs don't all indeed have fades, though i'm not sure they fit my strict criteria ("kingdom" and "genetic" fading on a solitary drum beat? come on... "mary christ" finishes, the fade is part of the "kool thing" preprise! come on..."sunday", i forgot to listen to! come on...)
maybe i should have added "while the whole band is still playing" rather than one member winding down ("kingdom", "genetic", "kotton krown"). let's hear more!

"sweet shine" and "pattern recognition"
a fade is a way of ending a song by lowering the volume without willing to end the song. sunday, expressway, in the kingdom #19, even the sprawl just have their own ending and I don't feel them like a fade. mary-christ, kotton krown and genetic have ends that brake up to the stop. as for "I know there's an answer" I forgot this song since a long time. I know only one other song that is as shitty as that. it's a song by our very popular french band: Indochine - "le dernier jour". |

yeh, it fades on steve's drumbeat, but the song itself is built from improvisational sections so i'd argue that it has no clear 'finish' by design anyway...

if you can identify the final note of the song, i would argue it doesn't fade. this goes for both 'sweet shine' and 'pattern recognition'.
