In a good way? Or a "Radiohead already did it" kind of way?

I loved Illinoise and I really admire his obvious talent/ambition, but I quickly got tired of the choirboy/banjo plucking shtick. But halfway through sampling this new mutherfucker, I'm floored. (ie Kid A in a good way.....not very similar to the actual Kid A, but a similar "move", if that makes sense.) I'll have much more to say about this after I (snicker....I'm so old fashioned) pick up the cd tomorrow.

Age of Adz replaces the sweeping strings and horns with bloops and bleeps, not that different just a little more electronic, still the same melodies you'd expect from Sufjan Stevens, like I said in the new release thread, he uses autotune.

Yeah, it's funny that the autotune seems to piss so many off. In my 3 runs thru this magnificent album so far, I see that aspect as an "artistic choice" which actually enhances the proceedings. I mean, Christ, Lennon did that thing in Tomorrow Never Knows. Was that a bad thing?
I do agree though that the electronics are "flourishes" and not some kind of Metal Machine Music redifine. It still very much sounds like a Sufjan album. Just like Kid A was very obviously Radiohead, from the first 30sec. OKC be damned.

Just want to say that I quickly got tired of this, it's a bit of a mess, but the "EP" preceding it, All Delighted People, is ace imho, and it got bad reviews everywhere it seems.

I had friends going crazy over this album. But it just sounded like really long versions of his shit I had already heard and grown tired of, with, as someone else deftly put it, with more bleeps and bloops.

That's fair, I think. At first I really loved it, on the surface, but there didn't seem to be much beneath the surface, knowhatimean? And then someone gave me that "EP" (60mins long) for Xmas, and I groaned a bit, remembering all the bad reviews.....and I just don't fuckin get it! Most under-rated release of 2010 for me. It's beautiful. The songs on All Delighted People are stuck in my brain. I still can't get beneath the surface of Adz....it's too cluttered and claustrophobic.

is there anyone on this board who doesn't think this man is as appealing as a large enchanted talking faecal beast emanating air borne ebola spores in his very breath with each sickeningly smug word that comes out more excruciating than the last?
