is it just me or is dance music non-existent in 08? im talking about all that ed banger stuff, simian mobile disco, vitalic, guns n bombs, DFA, etc...kind of dance music. i can only think of a few good techno, house or electronica releases this year. the only big releases i could think of is luomo, ellen allien , lidstrom, kleerup, cut copy, M83 and crystal castles. and when i think of big dance singles all i can come up with is blind by hercules and love affair and thats about it. did the dance music scene just blow its load on 07 and didnt have enough potency for hipster kids of 08?

also, does anyone know any good dance tracks from 08?

I personally think all that stuff is revolting. Especially Crystal Castles. I'm glad it's blown over actually.

Cool if you like it though.

It ain't nonexistant, just no one cares.. Everyone wet their panties over it a long time ago and people don't care anymore....

Also... Crystal Castles are definitely one of my most hated bands.. yuck.

..But hey if you like it, like Derek said, that's cool.

Good stuff. I want some spaghetti.

If you haven't listened, check out the husband and wife folk group PLANTS and their album Double Infinity. I'm digging it a lot.

i'm totally out of touch with dance music these days, but this board is good for it http://www.dissensus.com/ just be aware that most of the people there are unbearable and incapable about of talking about anything without turning it to socio/political/economic theorizing, on even the most banal of topics, e.g. funky house.

I don't follow ''dance'' music (house,tecno,trance,etc...) but I found that the new Daedulus ?sp? album has some great songs rock some bodies.

You obviously don't know a great deal about the genre then. Give Wolfgang Voigt or Dirk Leyers a listen.

EDIT: BTW, I'm not an expert either, but there's a huge bulk of artists producing quality, interesting music (other than Villalobos) within the genre.

Voigt is the shit. Ellen Allien, too. There's a lot of forward-thinking stuff out there. With dance music, you can't really go wrong with funk.. or minimal wave:

I like Lady Gaga a whole heck of a lot. Sort of a pop/dance thing going on there.

I don't know about the US, but in the UK dance music is still pretty massive - albeit in the underground. House music isn't that big right now, but homegrown Hip Hop, Grime and Drum n Bass are still going very strong. It's just that the music papers have decided not to chat about them much lately, finding it far easier to focus on more conventional 'bands'. Dance music has always been really hard to market to a traditional Rock audience: which tends to demand good interviews, emphasises the importance of live performance and places a premium on 'musicianship' and 'personalities', none of which are particularly high-priority in 'dance' circles.

I don't know Wolfang Voigt? I made a thread for the Gas re-issues that came out this year, but honestly, would you seriousy get up and groove to his music? no way. And I don't really know much about dance music, but I know plenty about electronic music, and most electronic music these days just isn't something you'd hear in a club. Whenever I go to clubs these days all I hear is top 40 hip hop, dancehall, reggaeton, old techno, etc..

Exactly, Grime and Dancehall=Dance music now. I've heard some GREAT Grime stuff this year; Riko-The Truth, Trim-SOul Food VOlume 3, Lethal Bizzle-Back to Bizznezz, etc.. And of course The Bug-London Zoo I;ve been saying consistently is the most powerful hip hop based thing to happen to music in god knows how long. It reminds me of a Dub-Infused hypnotic Bomb Squad with Industrial under-tones, and of course a horde of great Dancehall and Grime MC's. Kevin Martin has been creating a diverse catalog of various electronic, industrial, hip hop, and dubstep releases for years and has been involved with some classics; 16-17-Gyatso and Techno Animal-S/T for instance, but the Bug is the most mindblowing sound he's yet to come up with.
