Yeah, but what?
I mean there are dozens of artists and even more titles of royalty to attach to them, this list if it ever occurs will be expansive. |

Yeah, but that has been done or touched upon on this board a lot more than any soul/funk artists have. I mean look up any punk thread and there is inevitably an argument on who started it and where everyone fits.

Aretha Franklin was dubbed "the Queen of soul" or "Lady soul" but I much prefer Nina Simone ("the high priestess of soul").

Godfather: James Brown
Godmother: Billie Holiday (other female jazz vocalists like Etta James, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, and Sarah Vaughan deserve mentions too though) Uncle: Otis Redding Aunt: Aretha Franklin Nieces: Ronnie Spector, Martha Reeves Nephews: Robert "Kool" Bell, Smokey Robinson King: Al Green (the KING of SOUL) Queen: Diana Ross (sure, she did a lot of doo-wop Motown R&B, but overall, the Lady, Her Majesty, has got soul) Earl: Stevie Wonder (although a little experimental at times, a little funky, still huge soul) Duke: Marvin Gaye Duchess: Tammi Terrell Prince: Prince Rogers Nelson (some funkiness of course, like George Clinton etal., but Prince got soul, baby...he has some good straight-up (w/ a twist o' Prince) R&B numbers too on certain albums) Princesses: Wendy, Lisa, Sheila E., Vanity, Apollonia (ha) (I don't know the newer ones...Kat? She ain't got no soul powa) |
