Those fuckers don't rest on a price.

DDN Deluxe, for example, was priced at £15 (four copies of) when I saw it in there first. Literally less than two weeks later when I could resist it no longer I went back in there and found just two copies remaining and a new price of £22! I didn't buy it. I kicked a few cds off the shelf nearby and stormed off in a huff.

Today, after I had raved to a friend that he should go and get the Thurston album because they miraculously stock it in HMV, and because it carried a price of £9.95, we discovered together that not only had a coupla copies been sold but now . . yes, . . lo and behold . . . the price was up to £13!

I don't know how much of this goes on exactly but it makes me feel a tad uneasy. My mate bought trees but i could detect that it was tinged with a little regret and disappointment for him . . . when it should have been a very nice moment.

HMV just pisses me off man! Does it you?

I almost never bother with HMV cause 1. they havent got a free student card and 2. theres many other options around. They just dont sell music anymore in there.

Often a cd that costs £12 in HMV or Virgin Megastores costs £5-6 in a decent shop.

Strange, I went into my local HMV today, picked up 'brighten the corners' by pavement and noticed the nasty price in the corner, also gone up to £13. Takes the biscuit doesn't it.
I don't like it, but not many other choices around where I live and I don't like buying stuff from the internet.

^yes. they know your spending habits. that's why they get away with it.

i too enjoy shopping in reality. y'know, gettin' out.

brighten the corners is (controversially, i think) my favourite pavement album, incidentally.

Every year someone in my family buys me a HMV voucher and it always takes me month deciding what to buy with it, their selection is rubbish.

We've had 2 HMV's close now that JB HI-FI are here. Their prices are almost half that of HMV.

JB Hi Fi are also the devil, maybe even more so. They're owned by the Macquarie Bank who'll probably own most of Australia in 20 years and aim to close down the independent store. When JB HiFi open in the one of the managers at JB went straight into Red Eye Records and said "It's our aim to put you out of business".

In short I'll never buy anything from JB HiFi and wouldn't mind if all the Macquarie Bank CEOs died.

Yeah yeah I know but I need to get my music from somewhere and I'm just glad it's cheap.
Australia is the worst place if you are looking for variety in music stores. The most obscure any shop gets is Guided by Voices. It's impossible to find any Jesus Lizard, Shellac (except EIG), Polvo, Unwound etc anywhere.

Sydney has some alright independent stores, nothing as good as Missing Link in Melbourne. Red Eye and Utopia (even though it sucks) would most likely have have all those bands. Title and Paint It Black both have some great shit for more specialised areas. Some of the places that have a large amount of used stock like Lawsons and Egg have some great finds. There's a nice little record store in Erskinville too, forget its name but it's near the station.

The store I work at, Re-pressed Records is way out in Penrith and has both Jesus Lizard and Unwound in stock at a price about as cheap as JB HiFi. A fair bit of our new stock every month would be considered more obscure than GBV. It's a hard slog trying to convince westies how great Electric Eels are though.

SUMMARY: Sydney has some good stores around, it just takes a bit of searching. They seem to be really bad at getting there name out. Title had been open for 2 years before I'd even heard of it.

I don't know. There's an HMV in Montreal where I have found some pretty obscure stuff (the Monks, Green River, Mouthus, the Chameleons UK). But of course, they're really expensive.

Unfortunately, neither Red Eye or Utopia stock Jesus Lizard, but i'm intrigued that I can get it from your store (btw props on having a cool job). Can I buy it online somhow?
