Am I the only person who was not aware that the garage attendent in Ferris Bueller's Day Off was, in fact, former SY drummer Richard Edson?
I discovered this yesterday when I happened to flip past Ferris Bueller's Day Off on tv. They had little trivia captions popping up on the screen and one of them read something like, "The garage attendent was played by Richard Edson, who before going into acting was the drummer for influential post-punk outfit, Sonic Youth." I was so stunned. I've seen that movie like 800 times and never realized that was him. I guess he's done a bunch of films. He was even in Platoon. You can check it out here > http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002057/ |

Yes I think you are, and most people who saw it, and do not know who Sonic Youth is.

Perhaps we were watching the same channel last night, because I saw the same trivia bit on TV. It wasn't news to me, but I did think it was weird they even thought to mention it.
Oh and Platoon is just fantastic.

No shit. He's been in a bunch of movies for many years. As soon as he left SY, he became a prolific minor character in many movies during the 80's and early 90's.

random notes:
the guy in the "bittersweet me" video is John Hyrns or Hearns...(pretty sure his name is John...think that's his last name) He moved from Athens to Austin after this video was made. he was a denizen of the now closed The Engine Room/The Manhattan bars. He was in c-00 protege Dominic De Joseph's (moved from Roger Corman's office in L.A. to Athens) short entry at the 40 Watt for Flicker film club and later, this video. Stipe once checked out eight copies of Wings of Desire for Dominic and took a year to return them. When he did, he just hurriedly stuffed them into the drop box as my friend, the manager of that store at the time, tried to chase his beat-up Volvo wagon down through the parking lot. I have another Stipe video store story actually too...for another time.

I was watching AMC channel just today because there was this new documentary series premiering called "movies that shook the world" and the first on the series is 2001: A Space Odyssey. It's only a half-hour, but it's very good.
During the program, one ofthe commerical breaks advertised for Ferris Bueller's Day Off being shown tonight on AMC and the little bumper had the scene with Sheen and Grey in the police station with the accompanying trivia that "Sheen stayed up for 48 hours to achieve this look." And then, it flips to a shot of Edson's hair in the breeze in the Ferrari (posted by Pax Americana, top of last page) and the blurb comes "he was the original drummer for Sonic Youth."

I just saw Ferris Bueller's Day Off today with the DVD notes at the bottom of the screen. I had no idea Richard Edson was the parking attendant until now. I was going to create a thread but apparently this is old news...
