i saw thurston last night at the ecstatic peace showcase at sxsw and he played with steve shelley and a violinist whose name i was too drunk to hold on to, but she was nice, though (initially, the rumor was that it was going to be the entire band, but i spoke with steve shelley when i got to the venue and he told me that not everyone was there). all five of the songs he played were from his upcoming album and he announced almost every title, which my girlfriend lovingly took down on her cell phone.
Never Friend Frozen Guitars The Shape Silver "allllllright, this is our last one for you guys" the new stuff was really beautiful and i actually teared up during "silver." -mike watt, mv & ee, charalmbides, sunburned, magik markers and gown were all there too.

I have a feeling the new album is closing in!!!
Thanx, you've made me very excited about this. Were most songs instrumental or with lyrics as well? |

it was about 50/50. the lyrics weren't very intrusive when they were present, though. the songs were jammy, but not in a bad way, more of a minimialist trance inducing 2-chord jam.

Thanks. Thurston didn't invite the rest of the band because he was afraid they will steal his tunes again for the next sy album.

Haha, yeah. I wish 'Rather Ripped' would have been a Thurston solo outing though. |

what's funny is that during his set, we kept making jokes about how these songs weren't gonna stay as his but end up on the new SY record.

i didn't see any of the other performances because i either got to the venue too late or was too drunk to get across town.
fun times either way.

i don't discriminate. love is love and it don't matter where it's coming from. i don't know if anyone got any bootlegs or not. i didn't see anyone with cameraphones filming or anything like that, but since this is the age of technology, i'm sure SOMEONE recorded it one way or another.

damn, i'm curious to hear that "silver" that you liked so much. was it rain-on-tin-ish or similar to anything we've heard? (i'm thinking about your reaction). damn, i regret not having able to go to sxsw but it was really impossible (im swamped with work-- which is good!). maybe i'll plan it carefully for next year... |

i don't know if i'd complain it to rain on tin, because rain on tin is so lush and there's so much action between the guitars. silver was pretty minimal and the end felt like it droned on for a good while, but the majority of the action was really subtle things that steve would do.

i didn't see chris habib there at all, oddly enough.
hmm...i guess you could compare it to the last minute or so of "new hampsire" when they just drone on that chord, letting it get more intense until it just dies.

Are we thinking like 'Visiting Friends' by Animal Collective mixed with Grizzly bear?
