the opposite of hope is not hopelessness, it is despair, which is a horrible emotion

thinking about it, there are instances when there is nothing left to do and you know the bullet is coming to your forehead and you have to accept it as the reality it is-- such situations are hopeless because there is no realistic "good outcome".
