i just love how this one points out the irony of a mass produced, commercialized shirt that glorifies communism.
"yeah, join the revolution - buy the t-shirt." |

the thing is, communism was as much for mass production as capitalism, if not more. frederick taylor was admired by lenin. it's the markets that work different, but in essence it's the same shit. i was surprised to watch a soviet movie some time ago ("moscow does not believe in tears") and found that people were equally preocuppied with acquiring consumer goods as in the west-- home furniture, cars, washing machines... |

yes, this all stems from marx's error in thinking that it was capitalism that alienated labor. in fact it's not capitalism but industrialism that alienates labor, because your work is not consumed by you but goes for distribution into a market. so, soviet factory workers were as alienated from their labor as their western counterparts. this is of course not my analysis-- i was reading alvin toffler's "the third wave" the other day & he makes it very clear. that book is now 25 years old and as prophetic as ever. but anyway, yeah, see, the thing is, marx's error was perpetuaded by his fanatic followers. at the time of marx, industrialism was the sole product of capitalism. industrial communism was the same thing, only the products are shittier. i was watching "goodbye lenin" just the other day and, the funniest of things, the mom is surprised when she's told that the car she requested is on the way, "only after 3 years after she ordered it." of course the car is an antiquated piece of shit. she spends a lot of the time writing petitions to factories so that they change the sizes of the clothing, etc-- when you don't have a free market, you get one kind of shit that fits all, and instead of shopping elsewhere, you have to make petitions. hilarious! |

Well, it proves that communism and capitalism both do not work, together or seperated. Sure, i prefer a "democratic" system to communism, but just because itīs better doesnīt mean it works. !@#$%!: You speak German? Or has Goodbye Lenin been translated? Very good movie. |

'Goodbye Lenin' can be bought on DVD with subtitles. Very good movie, as you say.

yes, yes, subtitles, and it's brilliant; the commentary track unfortunately remains in german, a language as alien to me as the tongue of the ancient mayas; this is one occasion when i would not mind a little dubbing.

Dubbing is usually inferior though, isn't it? I generally find it better to read the subtitles and hear the real acting; you can usually tell if it's decent acting or not even if you don't understand the words.

yes yes, of course-- i meant for the commentaries-- the director speaking about the tricks of his trade, etc, while the movie plays. often my favorite feature of dvds.

On a related note. Russia is joining the WTO in 2007.

ha ha mc lenin-- that would be 1 kind of shitty burger for all, with long lines that go around the block... and you'd have to put your application to actually go there 2 years in advance...
