I'm curious to know. I'm talking about people who stand for something and overcome adversity and all that sort of stereotypical yet realistic nonsense.
Mine? Because he knows absolutely everything, and he isn't an arse about it. The reason I want to know all of your heroes is I'm doing a series of paintings on great people for my college art course this year and I desperately need inspiration. |

the man on the horse: sinterklaas. he's santa claus' ancestor, comes here every year on the 5th of december and brings candy and toys to good kids who put their shoe in front of the fireplace. he was a bishop, saint-nicholas, who gave money to a guy who couldn't afford his daughter's wedding. and he also puzzled three children togehter who were slaughtered by someone and chopped to pieces. i like him because even though no one in my family believes in him, he still brings a very nice atmosphere to our home every year. |

The person I admire the most is my signature. An actor, director, scriptwriter, painter, comedian, ex-video game designer, editor, novelist, and about a thousand other things.. and he's really talented in everything... a genius. And that word gets thrown around too much maybe, but... yeah.. A true renaissance man.
But my HERO was probably Ed Wood and people like him; anyone with qualities like his is my hero.. I like his hardheadedness, the fact that he kept doing what he was doing in spite of everything (lack of talent, lack of money, etc.). I don't know if Tim Burton/Johnny Depp's romanticized version of his life story really did him justice.. he was an alcoholic and something of a sleazeball, apparently... but he just kept doing whatever to reach his goals... I think people in my life who I look up to also fit this kind of standard... I have a friend who is the brokest person I know but somehow he always manages to do the things he wants to do (without bumming money from people) and he always has a good time, even without a dime to his name... and he'll do the most impossible things... one time we had to move a whole bed and everything he owns in this little ass car for an hour long drive.. it was so crazy.. he was tying everything to the car with ropes and shit and we were sitting on top of his records in the seats, literally the ENTIRE CAR was filled with his shit, you could barely even move, up to our necks in movies and records and shit... so funny... I just love people who go and accomplish things in spite of whatever setbacks might incur... |

Carl Sagan is a great guy. True passion in his desire to learn, to explore, and true love of the universe and science.

One of my heroes is in my avatar. Not necessarily because of the drugs and a naive romanticism to drug culture, but because he lived free. On his own terms. Covered political stories and partied with politicians but also acid heads, crazies, drifters, and etc. kind of like kickin it with tax collectors and the whores.

I have to admit, Thurston Moore has achieved many things I aspire to: having an incredibly innovative band, a marriage that has lasted for decades, the ability to do creatively whatever he wants and play music with all sorts of amazing people, and constantly proving that you don't have to be an asshole to do any of that.
I've actually done o.k. with the marriage and band on my own terms, but we had to figure out that they had to be separate entities. I've given up on talking my wife into playing with us. It always works out great musically but makes our relationship stressed in ways it doesn't need. |

I admire certain people for certain reasons but "hero" is too intimate and encompassing.

Are you ready for that? Checking into a Vegas hotel under a phony name with intent to commit capital fraud and a head full of acid?

I'm more partial to 'the kentucky derby is both decadent and depraved'
something about the original ya know. plus i had a similar experience since I live in cinci, one year we went to the derby (dont ask why) to visit some friends and we ended up doing so much....well, everything...just to tolerate all the damn rednecks mixed with bluegrass royalty...that we became more dispicable then them. oh the irony.... |
