I spent the best part of today listening to the four Stooges albums and started thinking how some bands just seem to totally defy the concept of the 'producer'.

All their studio albums except Funhouse (IMO their best album) were produced by big names: John Cale; David Bowie; and Steve Albini, and all three of them completely fucked up. Cale didn't seem to get them at all, confused into believing he was dealing with some kind of Doors/Shangri-Las hybrid (which actually sounds like a pretty cool concept - but it's not the stooges); Bowie couldn't have fucked up Raw Power any more if he'd decided to let the drummer from Def Leppard do the hand-claps and Albini just seems to think every band requires the same production method regardless of whether they have a bass-player or not.

Ex-Kingsmen Don Gallucci seems to have done the best job on Funhouse, but even he seems a bit scared of guitars at times. Which sort of makes sense - considering he's a keyboardist by trade.

OK, I'm being a little harsh on Gallucci, but I dunno, I'm seriously beginning to believe that no one aside from me (and I can't even play the guitar) should've ever been allowed to produce The Stooges.

Actually, when I think about it, I probably should've produced most albums. I promise you they'd be at least ten percent better than they are.

You can produce the forthcoming Cunt album (though I guess it means it'l be heavy on the triangle).

It's a testament to the Stooges' talent that the songs shine through almost in spite of the production. Their most recent album sure sucked, but it was mainly because of the poor quality of songwriting, methinks. The Albini production job on that was atrocious, nevertheless.

Agree about the poor songwriting. but I mostly put that down to Iggy. The music was fine, but Iggy and Albini fucked things up royally. The Weirdness is a sort of decent album struggling to escape the clutches of Iggy and Albini's combined egos. I bet Asheton was fucking livid with the results. He's great on it.

PS: Bought a copy of Birthdeath Experience off a hippie in Wales. Played same Whitehouse clips off youtube to Theresa, and she's well worried about you.

Iggy has many issues re The Stooges - it's about time he realised that he wasn't the main selling point of that band - an integral part of it, but not it.

PS. Funnily enough, I remember Theresa asking me about WH and Vagina Dentata Organ many years ago. I think Theresa's worried that I'll find out where she lives and pull out my big Whitehouse joker card on arrival

Ah, thanks sir. Send me love to her next time you speak.

You should be producing "Chinese Democracy" - at least that way, it might get released at some point this century. "Right Axl, I'm going to replace this lead vocal of yours with Ned Hayden".

A great point. nobody say's "well c'mon" quite like Iggy, but The Stooges were great for more reasons than Iggy could ever possibly fathom.

Iggy has always used bands as a vehicle for himself. The sad thing is that in the case of The Stooges he was only the second most important member.

I'm tempted to call him the Bobby Gillespie of late 60s-early 70s garage punk, but I won't. BG could never howl a convincing "well c'mon" if his life depended on it.

Oh yeah, of course you were. Oops. Sorry.

demonrail - if Gillespie knew that you'd mentioned him in the same breath as the Stooges, he'd wank himself senseless. Well, at least it stops him from talking about Mahalia Jackson again...

The long-haired guy with Rowland is Tony Cohen, who engineered/produced "Junkyard".

Well Raw Power is NOT David's fault. Iggy kept telling him to turn up the treble and distortion, which was thinning the fuck out of it. Bowie would never have created that. That being said, the good numbers on there can't be stopped. My band does great versions of Search and Destroy as well as Gimme Danger. Some people don't know them and think they're ours..haha. oh well..
