For me, there are just some bands i can trust on blind faith. I'll buy the new record without hearing any of it because I know the band will release something good. I just trust the band's musical abilities.
My list: sonic youth built to spill melt banana white stripes lightning bolt Mission of burma which bands do you give the priviledge?

bands who's releases have never disappointed me that i'd probably just pick up and buy (still-active bands only):
lightning bolt melt banana omoide hatoba radiohead shellac thinking fellers union local # 282 (well, it's debatable if they're still together or not...) venetian snares that's all i can think of right now. but those artists are all fairly consistant... |

So far as bands still in existence, hmmmm.....
I tend to buy stuff by current bands more because I want to see where they're 'at' at a certain point in their progression. So I don't mind if they have as dip in form or a change in style. That said, I totally trust The Howling Hex. |

I don't do this to specific bands, I could give any old group a go.
Haven't bought much recently, but just a few bands whose albums I recall buying without hearing: Current 93 OOIOO Melt-Banana Sonic Youth Kayo Dot Boredoms etc. etc. |
