Curiosity - I've abandoned completism the last few years, and have taken to not bothering with getting a band's complete works. Just out of curiosity, d'you have preferences? Get everything by a band, or get lots of things by different bands?

every once in a while there'll be a band who comes along who i feel the urge to procure their entire range of produce; but mostly, i'd rather get a variety of things by a variety of people.
then again, most of the people who i feel compelled to buy, or at least hear, everything they've done, tend to be the kind of people who tracking done everything they've done would be a complete and expensive pain in the arse. |

Breadth for me, and depth for a select elite.

This is part of the problem with completism - when I started getting into bands when I was a nipper, getting 20-odd singles and 4 or 5 albums didn't seem too difficult. Someone like Haino, or Merzbow, not to mention your jazz types or even someone like Wolf Eyes put out an inordinate amount of music. I'd like to meet a Merz completist, but I can only imagine they'd be entirely insane.

Merzbow is surely one of those people for whom there is absolutely no way he has a mother. There's a few of those in music. It's just not possible to see little Masimi having someone spitting on a napkin to clean his face. Just not feasible.

i like to get a variety of things by different people but when i find a band/musician i like a lot then i go all out for them and try and get as much as i can by them. its hard now though because there is so much and so many ways to get it that i just cant keep up. oh well, i am going to drink coffee.

I used to be a completist back in the days (like 10 years ago) when I was a huge fan of Radiohead (teenage years, y'know). But it was this blind kind of fandom, when I thought that this was the only good band existing in the universe, and basically the only thing I cared for.
But nowadays, I don't do that. I don't even do that with Sonic Youth. It's pretty hard to be a completist in a country where all you can get in music stores is utter shit.

Back on topic, consider jon boy post quoted "in toto" , except for the coffee bit, and add that, unless you live in the same country where the band you like is from, it's almost impossible to get all the cd-r , "sell at live only" etc etc kind of stuff. That said, blah blah, _slavo_ , sell me some radiohead stuff .

There are bands that I'll fall madly in love with and want to get everything I possibly can by them, but that doesn't stop me from also wanting to hear all sorts of other stuff from across the board. Generally wanting to discover everything by a particular band results in my discovering that not everything by them is utterly brilliant.
My current "everything possible" bands are SY, Neubauten, and Mono. |

The latter for me, but there are two musicians/bands of which I'll try to get everything: Tim Buckley and The Notwist. |

I've tried with Stereolab but gave up. I think that I have everything that Broadcast ever put out. Other than that, I try to concentrate on soundtracks, library music, antique electronic music etc. Not really a band in particular.
