All can be covered -- some orchestra covered Metal Machine Music a few years ago... but as far as "should" or "shouldn't", I usually don't like covers very much, so eh.

Mars Volta's songs should never be covered.
Wait no, what I actually meant is that they should not exist in the first place. |

classic songs should never be covered on ALBUM. If you wanna cover any song live that is cool, but to put your shit version of Purple Haze, or Crazy Train or whatever on your album takes some balls,a nd it almost never comes off well.
remember Motley Crue's HORRENDOUS version of Anarchy in The UK? or Megadeth's version? sux

Stevie Ray Vaughan is excellent but covered too many Hendrix songs especially Voodoo Chile (slight return) which he should never have touched.
On the other hand SY's cover of the Beatles Within You and With Out You is superior imo.

If the aim is to make a total blue print copy of the original, then the cover probably shouldn't be done.
But I don't think there's a song so "sacred" that it's forbidden to cover it. |

Stop covering Beatles songs.
Stop covering "Hallelujah." Do not attempt "Rock Lobster." It will scarcely be better than a drunk guy and two even drunker girls doing their version at a karaoke bar. "Walk Away Renee" by Left Banke. "Surrender" by Cheap Trick.

This. His version of little wing was good, but likely because he was smart enough to not sing on it.

Smiths covers always suck, except for a strangely dead on Mummy the Peepshow cover of "This Charming Man". Mummy the Peepshow are a cool little Japanese garage rock band, and somehow the guitarist plays every note perfectly and sings the song at the same time (?!), in hilariously broken english, but the song itself rocks. I cant' find a video or anything for it, but they played it live at every show, so I know it's not just studio trickery. Really amazed me that she could sing that shit AND play all the riffs... um, anyway, if you have slsk, search for it!!
