I've been listening to Double Nickels on the Dime recently and a lot of the time it just seems like D is just saying whatever comes into his head, particularly on Shit from an Old Notebook. Note that this is in no way a bad thing, I'm just curious.

i think some are, but he liked to write shit in an old notebook, so i think most of his songs were already written with maybe a little improv.

Well, amongst 40+ songs (I know he doesn't sing on all of them but...) there's probably some clear improved vocals.

That album rules, by the way. I once heard them called "the punk Beefheart". Perfect. Some of the guitar lines and bass lines definitely seem to support that theory, though not so much on this album.

"Political Song for Michael Jackson to Sing" is amazing. Mix tape staple. Also, even though it's the Jackass song, I LOOOOOOOOOOVE "Corona"...

ive heard them called the punk beefheart many times, which i guess makes some sense cuz they took a popular genre and made it weird, but i see them more in like with like a punk credence or something, americana punk, theyre certainly not nearly as avant garde or experimental as the captain was, but they could be one of the best punk bands that ever graced this fine country of ours.

im not sure if they improvised lyrics. in we jam econo they talked about the writiing process of their songs and lyrics and never mentioned it. a lot of his lyrics, and mike watts where very witty and thought out. and some were more speilish.
they are in my top five all time bands
i love everything about them( except for a few songs off the polotics of time)
so whats your favorite minutemen song?
favorite watt bass line?
favorite d.boon riif/solo
favorite lyric?

Shit from an Old Notebook is perhaps my favorite Minutemen song. The first five seconds are some of my favorite seconds in music.

History Lesson part II is fucking perfect, I dunno, if he hadn't died it wouldn't have been so great.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGHNcQ4zv6Y

this version particularly, it was almost as if they knew what was going to happen.

top 20 band for me.

It was the part where he goes "fuck advertising" that made me start this thread. I always laugh at that part like he's making fun of punk bands or something.
