I collect lost and unwanted toys.
toys with broken parts, lost in a parking lot or even dug out of a sandbox....I love them. my favorite (which for some reason I can't find) is Pete the Meat with Feet. Pete is a jar (with feet) that says "meat" on it. although finding it in a parking lot would have been good enough, the question "who would want a jar of meat with feet" has made it one of my prized collections. today, in a parking lot, I found a toy hippo that had been run over a few times. I feel like a savior. what do you collect? |

i don't "collect" things-- i just accumulate stuff, i.e. books and records. what else is there to accumulate?
i do it without any sort of plan or goal. i get what i like, i use it, i shelve it for future reuse. if i have no use for it i don't want it. i definitely have no collector's instincts, and no interest in starting any collection any time soon. Quote:

I wouldn't say that I have a plan, since my collection relies upon serendipitous discovery. |

I collect records and mid-century modern furniture. And the occasional View-Master reel.
I used to collect toys, but they kind of took over my house and the cluttered feeling sort of negated the joy I got from being able to make Simsons figures talk to each other or marveling at the detail of how the hooks went into the face of a Clive Barker "Tortured Soul" figure just so. Same for underground comix. I classify myself as a "consumer" of these rather than a "kollektor," because I really only have the patience to take good care of my LPs and I don't really want to put that kind of retentiveness into something like comic books. My actions make the collections of TRVE KVLT KOMIX KOLLEKTORS more valuable anyway, so they should be grateful for my blasphemies. |

My record collection takes up a lot of space, but I don't really have the disposable income to get to the point of "imprisonment" for decades. I thin it out occasionally also. Furniture is a tough one and I have to watch it; I am at the point now where I have to get rid of something in order to bring something else in. This can keep me in check and help with deciding what I "need" to have and what I need to simply "appreciate" and move on. I have one friend whose life as a professional collector/antique dealer/packrat could easily be made into a movie, and his house (which is HUGE) is completely full of all manner of crazy things of old. Some would view his life as an imprisonment of sorts, but knowing him, I cannot imagine him living any other way. His house is a constant source of fascination for me, and I love staying with him when I am in Boston. However, it also served as the cautionary example for me, and was very helpful in my decision to focus my collecting on a couple of key interests. There is too much "cool old crap" out there to have all of it. Some of it you need to just marvel at and go on your way. |
