Does anyone have the lyrics of The Jacks' "Marianne"? From what little I know there seems to be a thematic crossover with the Sisters of Mercy song of the same name, and I'm interested to know whether Eldritch & Co ripped off The Jacks wholesale, or whether it's total coincidence.

I'm guessing Andrew Eldritch was banking on druggy goths not being all that well-versed in 1960s Japanese "Group Sounds."

I tried translating it after listening to the song on Youtube a couple times. I'm not entirely confident that I got it all right (the Japanese or the English), but this is more or less how it goes...
I love the stormy night The raging darkness is my guide I love the stormy night The men that come pounding in the rain arashi no ban ga sukisa ikarikuruu yami ga ore no michi annai arashi no ban ga suki sa nagurikakattekuru ame no otokotachi I set sail in a lake my boat furiously pounded by the storm dark, dark ore wa mizuumi ni fune o dasu arashi wa fune o mechakucha ni tataku makkura na makkura na... I am grasped by white hands appearing out of the water I summon the storm mizu no naka kara arawareru shiroi ryoute de ore wo dakishime arashi o sasou The life that gushes from the water Hair and body soaking violently the storm screams the lake rages the lightning strikes I appear in the storm mizu no naka kara wakideta inochi zubunure no kami to karada wo hageshiku ryoute de arashi wa sakebu mizuumi wa ikaru inazuma ga hashiru ore wa arashi de arawareru In a confused love... I can't see anything In the stormy night surrounded by deranged men I hold Marianne me mo kuramu koi ni... nanimo mienai arashi no ban ni hageshiku kurutta otokotachi ni kakomarete ore wa mariannu o daiteiru |

Oh diamn, I just read the Sisters of Mercy lyrics. That is pretty close, what with all that watery stormy boaty dreariness and what not. Weird.
In a sea of faces, in a sea of doubt In this cruel place your voice above the maelstrom In the wake of this ship of fools I'm falling further down If you can see me, Marian, reach out and take me home..... I hear you calling Marian Across the water, across the wave I hear you calling Marian Can you hear me calling you to Save me, save me, save me from the Grave... Marian Marian, there's a weight above me And the pressure is all too strong To breathe deep Breathe long and hard To take the water down and go to sleep To sink still further Beneath the fatal wave Marian I think I'm drowning This sea is killing me I hear you calling Marian Across the water, across the wave I hear you calling Marian Can you hear me calling you to Save me, save me, save me from the Grave... Marian Was ich kann und was ich konnte (What I can do and what I could do) Weiss ich gar nicht mehr (I just don't know anymore) Gib mir wieder etwas schones (Give me something beautiful again) Zieh mich aus dem meer (Drag me from the sea) Ich hore dich rufen Marian (I hear you calling Marian) Kannst du mich schreien horen (Can you hear me calling?) Ich bin hier allien (I am here alone) Ich hore dich rufen Marian (I hear you calling Marian) Ohne diene hilfe verliere ich mich in diessem ort (Without your help I am lost in this place) Marian, there's a weight above me And the pressure is all too strong To breathe deep Breathe long and hard To take the water down and go to sleep To sink still further Beneath the fatal wave Marian I think I'm drowning This sea is killing me |

P.S. Leonard Cohen's Marianne is my favorite Marianne of all the Mariannes out there.
Apparently Tori Amos and Coldplay have songs about this Marianne character too. |

My favourite 'Mary Anne' is the one by Glen Campbell/Juicy Lucy as covered by Spacemen 3 via the song ''Just One Time''. Sexy.

Thanks for that, Hat and Bread. I did a little research on the name Marianne, to see if there is some drowning sailor related story related to the name, but couldn't find anything. My curiosity is semi-satisfied for now though.
EDIT - I should've looked harder, and spelt the name Marian: The original Miryam of the Hebrew scriptures was sister to Moses and Aaron. Some scholars believe her name, and those of her brothers, could have originated in the ancient Egyptian language, and that their meanings are lost. Others offer alternate interpretations, including ''rebellion'' and ''sea of bitterness''. |
