Of the 5 masterpieces from the initial round of solo albums, those being (in order of release)
Tical by Method Man Return to the 36 Chambers by Ol Dirty Bastard Only Built 4 Cuban Linx by Raekwon Liquid Swords by GZA Ironman by Ghostface Killah My pick is Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. Everything on this album just. fucking. works. Raekwon and Ghostface, two classic MC's are in their prime and just straight spitting fire over some of the best beats RZA has ever crafted, and that's pretty high praise considering the man's production discography. These two facets alone make it a 5 star hip hop classic, but what really sets it apart for me is its functionality as an album, its flow, its narrative, use of movie samples, etc. Not only do I have a personal love for crime rap and the accompanying stories, but I can think of few other rap albums that have a consisent flow both soniclly and narratively like this one, making it not only my favorite album of the original batch, but also my favorite hip hop album behind only Enter the 36 Chambers.

Liquid Swords. Sweet Christ. GZA's lyrics and delivery...immaculate. RZA
and 4th Disciple's instrumentals are multi-tiered and intricate. He gave away the last song on the album to Killah Priest and even that was brilliant.

Liquid. Duh. It sounds like the 2nd Wu-Tang album. If you know what I mean.

Yeah Liquid is probably the best of the bunch, but I enjoy OB4CL the most.
I predict Tical will get the least love, not because its bad.. but because of what it has to go up against.

Tical is better than ODB's debut. Don't get me wrong I love all 5 albums you listed. But they're like this:
1. Liquid Swords 2. Only Built 3. Tical 4. Ironman* 5. Return To The 36 Chambers yes believe it or not, I put Ironman #4. Ghost is one of my favorite rappers, and this album is amazing -- but tough competion.

1.liquid
two way tie 2.obfcl and 3.iron man 4.return to the... 5.tical only built for cuban and iron have some of my favorite songs for sure(ice cream man is coming) out of all but liquid swords is the best album wise from start to finish except for b.i.b.l.e. really hate that song. i really like odb's too. for awhile that was my favorite but it didnt have staying power for me. never liked tical that much tho i think method is a great mc. i always liked the version of whatever the song is called with mary j blige better than the version that's on tical |
